Its an all male occupation.

Women can't go out as crew on a fishing boats because they cant urinate off the back of the boat

actual quote from a Cornish fisherman

when the nets are out you can't nip downstairs to use the head (toilet) and leave everything unattended for ten mins  so you have to dangle it off the back of the boat

It was interesting watching Piers Morgan on ITV 's Good Morning Britain calling out Katya Adler of the BBC for using the term "Fisher People" and he stated that of the people fishing in Britains waters 98% were male, hence the long used term "Fishermen."

In other countries the entire language is gendered! Think of the problem they are going to have.

For me:

Fisherman (male or female)

Policeman (male or female)

Fireman (male or female)

I know two female policemen and one is an armed anti-gang officer whilst the other is a specialist child / domestic abuse officer. I think they have more on their plate than worrying about gendered language.

Hello, does anyone think there will be a fishing industry in the uk after brexit negotiations ?

There is more chance because the EU has practically killed off our industry and when you hear the story from the people affected it was pretty blatent. Ted Heath agreed to terms that were, with hindsight, absolutely criminal.

you are right about Ted Heath but i think technology has a lot to do with it when you can spot a single mackrell then cast a net that can hold 7 jumbo jets you can't

sustain that amount of fishing and that's just one trawler

Piers hit the nail on the head with midwives, you have men doing the job.

The bloody country is pandering to all these snowflakes.

They want to do that profession, great but don't then moan to get its name changed.

Good point....midhusbands doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue! 🙂

This is what I think, the deal will be that we give Quotes  with licenses to EU fishing vessels that go down every year over say a 5 year period. During this time our own share will go up year on year giving us time to rebuild our own fishing industry. This may be a simple way to look at it but it could work well. Our fish stocks have been overfished for years and the cod seam to be smaller now than they were 10 years ago.

I fear it is not those in the job complaining but the urbanite perpetually offended on others behalf.

When we had the Scotch drifters come down to Yarmouth for the Herring fishing they brought the women folk to gut and barrel up the Herring , these were some of the strongest females you were ever likely to come across and not that many men could work as hard these did , most of them had bandages and plasters on every finger where the knife caught there fingers and they just carried on laughing and singing while working in all the Winter weather conditions , these were known as Fisher girls and who could gut around 60 Herring in a minute , truly amazing women .
