aldivalloch
Just in from giving my dogs a run on the hill. It's raining heavily here and my "waterproofs" have performed so poorly that even my more intimate bits of clothing are rather moist.... Any suggestions for replacements (and sources)? Keeping dry is the important factor - keeping warm less of an issue as it doesn't get that cold here. Thanks in anticipation!
JTaylor91
William Powell currently have a sale on. Harkila stuff almost half price
Yellow Bear
For dog walking I have a "stockman" style coat with cape shoulders that reaches below the knees and mostly the top of wellies. Kept me dry unless there is a high wind and then the knees get wet. Got it from Cotton Traders, Windermere long (50") now in sale at £
figgy
As above or ex mod poncho. Other that the ones listed oilskins made of pvc material, works but might as well wear a bin bag. You end up soaked off sweat. Poncho and treggings will keep you dry and not boil in the bag.
Centrepin
I'm old school, I like wax cotton coats, the longer the better and if its truly horrible then wax chaps. Topped with a leather cowboy type hat and on my feet, dirt boots (neoprene type wellies) or Danner boots.
tonyshooter
The Keepers and Loaders who I know on the grouse moors in Upper Teesdale use Paramo Pajero or Paramo Halcon coats and Paramo trousers ( not sure of the model. ) These garments are a bit pricey but these guys only use the best. Dave at kelton
For dog walking Austrian army gore-tex off the bay. Cheap and won’t let you down in grade 1. Alternatively basic agricultural plastic type jackets and trousers do the job but you might sweat a little.
Shearwater
May I suggest that sweat played a part in your wetness because you refer to a hill?!? One answer I have found when walking/working/beating in the wet is a wicking t-shirt ( Tresspass £5) , an expensive feel good jacket ( I use Paramo £300 ) then a second hand Goretex shell which gives you thorn/dog/barb-wire proofing ( Ebay £20 ) If your standing around or suffer from the cold then layers with some nice Tweed if you want to look the part or buy a Ridgeline Smock in extreme wet/cold I'm absolutely certain you need more than one configuration of wears depending on what your doing
ilovemyheckler
Harkila or Musto, both expensive but they work My favourite are Harkila Retriever coat and trousers which have performed faultlessly in really wet weather day after day
bluesj
Depending on budget Harkila, Seeland or army surplus gortex. There is always something from Harkila or Seeland on sale somewhere on line, John norris have some deals on. Had a seeland jacket and trousers for many years and they are very good for the money. Just treated my self to some from harkila and so far they haven't let the rain in.
Westley
For dog walking, look at some of the fishing clothing. A lot cheaper than shooting gear. I have a green 3/4 length Snowbee 'Field' coat, 2 large cartridge pockets, removable hood, handwarmer pockets, neoprene inner cuffs (adjustable) and 2 inner large 'poacher' pockets. Totally dry, cotton lining, drip strip. Brand new, off the bay from a tackle shop in Scotland, accepted my 'offer' of £60. For trousers I use the Rohan waterproof trousers, £50 in their sale. Use them for fishing and clayshooting, as well as going to the shops. Chuck them in the washing machine and they are dry in a couple of hours. aldivalloch
Thank you all very much for your responses. You've given me some great suggestions and leads. It's going to have to be a jacket and trousers job - we get too much wind too often up here for a poncho or coat. It's blowing F7 - F8 right now - again..... the geese'll be flying backwards tomorrow morning...
