My wife has 'retired' from work, and is not claiming any type of benefit, despite being 60 years old. This may be a daft question, but could her tax free allowance be transferred to me, even though she isn't in employment?

Only up to £1,250 of the allowance and only if you are a basic rate taxpayer.

Steve, I was in exactly the same position. I did my tax return on line in September and got my tax assessment.

My wife is 59 and retired 18 months ago. I did her tax assessment in October and applied to have her £1250 transferred me. Seven days later, my tax demand was reduced by £250 (20% of £1250).

Well done Hmrc!
