Katya Adler on the BBC this morning, "one of the sticking points is the EU's right to fish in our waters"

What rights? they will have expired by the end of this month!

At least she seems to have stopped using the "fisher people" term.

About the same rights as Britain had to stay in Hong Kong.

Am I right in thinking if there's a deal or no deal it will have to be ratified by parliament and if so are we going to end up with a farce like last time before the last election ?

Don't hold your breath!

I am sure the assembled elected idiots will do us proud in the shame stakes.:w00t:

Don’t use that argument as we had every right to stay in Hong Kong! It was only the New Territories that were leased from China but the U.K. government felt that sustaining HK without the New Territories was impossible so ceded all to China.

I will bow to your greater knowledge. I just thought it was an apt comparison.

A deal would have to be ratified, a no deal was the default position so needs no further approval.

Kinda ironic for the parties that scream a no deal would be the worst possible outcome, then go on to say they would refuse to approve a deal 🤔

Oh, for crying out loud! Surely we're not going to fall for this? Leave what the EU really wants until the end of the negotiations when what could look like a fovourable deal has been struck - one which they think that we may not wish to lose - and then just at the last minute mention fishing which after all, English, is not worth a great deal to you in overall terms is it? On second thoughts, we probably will.

I believe the real game is to make it all about fishing publicly, then at the eleventh hour, Boris will quietly sign off on the level playing field, sealing the uks fate to Brexit in name only, while the EU climb down on fishing, Boris proclaims victory and boasts of securing a fantastic deal for the county, when in reality, hell have sailed us up the river.

I very much hope I'm wrong but after 4 years of being lied to by our own government, can anyone blame me!

Like I've said all along, our best hope is that the EU continues to be so unreasonable that a deal can't be reached and then hopefully we can leave with no deal.

Fishing is a total red herring, pardon the pun. The real battle is financial services because we are predominantly a services based economy and if there’s a deal that screws fishing but protects london then...

About now, I couldn’t give a monkeys because:

1. My worrying about it won’t help

2. No one in government cares what I think / post on Facey

What I have seen in the pandemic is just how industrious we can be as a nation - or rather there remains a large chunk of people in our country that will work, do want to earn money and get on and are prepared to duck and dive and roll with the punches and change if need be. I don’t think the continent have much of that mentality - it’s years of socialism, form stamping and asking permission of a bureaucrat before doing anything.

So, I am content that whatever happens we can and will change and there is no such things as the end. If it’s a balls up, we’ll have to adjust won’t we?

Oh, and getting out of the club that’s going to have to fund the Covid economic bail out of Portugal, Ireland, Greece, Italy etc.... well I don’t see the EU lasting much longer. I’m still gutted the French didn’t vote in Le Penn - it only take a little table turner like that for the whole pack of cards to come down.

and thats precisely why there was never going to be a deal done before the very last possible minute. Its chest beating and brinksmanship of the highest order

That’s what I’ve bet on. I reckon they had a deal weeks ago.

It’s all tied in with the container blockages, operation stack and to soften us up to something less than ideal but which keeps the wheels turning.

We are living off the fat of the past and the future. We have no plan for education, no strategy for a knowledge based economy. Without long term investment and a strategic plan we will remain the product of short term slogan politics.

The so called 'red tape' is part of the standards that we put in place to protect our workers, our environment and provide the lifestyle that we currently have. All of these things, together with pensions, welfare state and the NHS will need to be cut to compete on price in an open market economy.

I dont know where you are coming from. My pension (personal & state) isnt worth  a carrot (35 years+ paid in), workers have no rights worth speaking of (gig economy anybody) until 2years or more service and dont start me on agency working !!!!   Am just pointing out that this was all in place well before Brexit

Deal or no deal it will all be less than ideal, just keep the wheels turning but it will be our wheels on our bus.

That's my point. We cannot afford what we have and our ability to pay for even that it is in decline. Populist, disruptive politics reflects the backlash of the masses to that dissatisfaction with the status quo.

No but, again from what I hear, UK boats seldom venture into "French waters" (some of which are UK territorial waters) to avoid conflict

Well that and because the French have fished them to oblivion.

Why do you think they want to be in our waters?

We actually have some fish!

The Spaniards are just as bad.

All of our inshore fleet should be fitted with torpedos so when one of those big ****** trawls through your gear within a mile of our coastline you can legally sink the ******.
