Bracken

Recommended Posts

Be careful with planting bracken. Its widely regarded as a pest. Its carcinogenic, practically impossible to walk through in the summer and provides little benefit to conservation as once it dominates, nothing else will grow under it. If its a commercially felled wood, you don't want bracken as you will need to replant trees and bracken stops or inhibits tree growth due to blocking light.

Plenty of other cover choices and agree with stuartybpoy, carefull how you handle bracken.   Nettles would be a better choice in my opinion and I hate them but at least they harbour insects and stuff birds enjoy.    Easier to bring in some brash and old christmas trees. I know one keeper who goes around the village collecting christmas trees after the festivities and puts them in his release pens and covers.

We clear felled most of our woods

The cover - regen - coppice after 2 years is incredible

We had a record season in year 1 and are set to smash that this year - even with Covid

We have gone from ana average of 50/60 to well over 120

The other wildlife that has come and continues to come is incredible

regards
