steve_b_wales
A friend of mine has just bought a new laptop and wants to install a free antivirus program. There's so many out there, but which is the best?
Morrisman
Avast. Never let me down. Mind you, I don't go into dodgy sites, except this one.
TIGHTCHOKE
Been using AVG for years!
Walker570
My computer guru installed AVG ..... seems to work, although you get annoying reminder pop ups all the time.
Westward
Used AVG for years until ZoneAlarm free edition firewall added built in anti virus and anti ID theft and malware features.
Gordon R
Another vote for Avast. Previously used AVG - fine.

udderlyoffroad
7 minutes ago, Stimo22 said: Why ? Because most anti virus programs seem to be adware strewn resource hogs, and Microsoft’s built in AV is comparatively well behaved. Wouldn’t touch AVG with a barge pole these days, but used to be excellent. Staying off the watch films for free sites helps no end.
Stimo22
Fine if it works for you, but as a Microsoft certified engineer having run IT systems of over 1000 computers I would advise all computer users to get a good antivirus system. BT have a good version free for their subscribers and some free systems are good. But to trust the Microsoft updates is not advised

Norton is know to slow down a computer, and I had a hell of a job to completely remove all the files.
ShootingEgg
I work in IT. All anti virus software works on the same definitions. So they are basically like a doorman, if ya names not on the list ya aint coming in. Windows 10 is shipped with Microsoft defender, its part of the system and should do all you need it to do. Just make sure you don't run two. They will conflict and cause your machine to slow down as they battle each other.

VicW
I too use Windows Defender and have done since the advent of Windows 10. It appears to work very well, is updated automatically, it scans automatically and is not invasive. Reviews of its efficiency are generally favourable, it suits me. Vic.
