He seems like a nice bloke. It's hard not to feel sorry for him.

And what make it even sadder is that he actually appeared in a Brexit campaign video.

It seems he trusted the wrong people....

The thing is, a lot of Brexiteers voted for the greater good, I certainly did, I have Lilley lost a fair bit of money due to Brexit and my interests, but I believe in the long run I and most others will be better off. I certainly didn't vote according to my own selfish ends, I know many who voted remain did.

He has had 4 years to sort his problem  out.

Not only that.

He knew this was coming, plus the EU have been trying to curtail his operation for years, by making the eels an endangered species.

That's why he was such a vehement brexiter, he actually thought leaving the EU would stop over each on his business, the business he's had for 50 years, mostly selling eels to errr.. the EU!

Mr Peter Woods does like a bit of publicity though, and is not thick , not by a long shot.

It's a case of any publicity is good publicity, and I reckon his stock has just gone up 😄

I think anyone who voted either for or against brexit for purely selfish reasons is wrong, a decision affecting an entire country should be voted on with the goal being the greater good for everyone (imo) and is how I voted and I believe most brexiteers did the same, I know many remainers voted simply because they had investments, we're ex pats, employed via EU funding (although I have some sympathy there), but it is wrong (imo) to put your own interests ahead of the country as a whole. I believe brexit was a real victory for the little people of this country, who usually get rolled over by the big guys and forgotten about by government.

the thing no ones asking is where is he getting the elvers from in the first place ? I was led to belive eels are protected in the UK .

This was the first thing that occurred to me.

They are not "farming/breeding" them, I am not sure how it can be "sustainable" if elvers are the offspring of a protected species.
No sympathy from me, time to get a proper job.

Extract from their website, "Glass Eels, a sustainable fishery which has been catching and distributing glass Elver eels from the River Severn since the 1970s, currently exports to countries including Germany, Sweden and Lithuania without the need for checks or restrictions."

They can be fished for and I believe it can be quite dangerous as there are gangs on the Severn controlling the fishery simply because the elvers are worth so much money. Maybe leaving the EU will mean they aren’t fished so hard as not worth so much which is a good thing ecologically.

In the dim and distant past I was taken elver fishing near Maisemore on the river severn. The memories are vivid.

At that time men were carrying on family traditions using ancient and odd looking nets. I never heard of the elvers being sold into the export market as most were used as treats within their families.

As soon as commercialism came along the problems of elver shortages became apparent.

This man has no one to blame but himself.

If you listen to the video he isn't complaining about his paperwork he already know what to do he on about  his customers having to fill in more paperwork who are over in the EU so they will buy from else where

Well if they're available in, presumably other EU countries ,then why doesn't he source them from there?

If the elver quality is the same in other areas why do they need flying in from the UK?

He already has a base in France,  he has his own aircraft and pilot.

If Severn eels are what his customers want , then they will do the paperwork!

Much more to this story than meets the eye.

much more than meets the eye , it seems to me that he is trying to get permision to sell to China now is trade in the EU may fold,  odly he would get a great deal more for them in China £3000 against £230 in the EU if he did get permision from the UK officials  after 12oclock tonight ! lol

Quote

Eels

You cannot:

export or move European Eels (Anguilla anguilla) from GB to the EU or NI

import or move European Eels from the EU or NI to GB

This is because they’re listed in annex B of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and the EU has a ban on imports and a zero export quota because of its assessment that such trade is detrimental to the survival of the species.

For some specific trade in European Eel from GB and NI, the UK CITES Scientific Authority has determined that it has been demonstrated scientifically that this trade is non-detrimental to the wild population of European Eel but the evidence provided by the UK is still being considered by the relevant EU CITES body.

He can't export anything - at least not in the meantime. His business is dead in the water.

Well it sounds like excellent news why wasn't it banned years ago, as sad as it is for the few who loose, a handful of businesses go bust, but it saves a species from the brink and all the ecological benefits that goes with it.

Looks like another sucess story of brexit to me!

Well, the Prime Minister did once famously say, "**** business!' Perhaps for once he's being true to his word. 😄 But the money that paid this chap's tax contributions and his workers incomes will now need to come from somewhere else. Rishi's magic money tree perhaps?

I think if the value of our finely balanced eco system could be worked out as a monetary value, it would dawf any loss to that man's business or his employee's, that's not to say I don't empathise at their misfortune, but some things in life are bigger than the individual, take war for example.

I believe brexit has offered a fantastic opportunity to make vast changes to some of the ecological damage done by being an EU member. And as Boris said, "prosper mightily" while we're at it.

Like I said, "great news"

There are a bucket load of very successful businesses that have been sacrificed for political ideology or blind adherence to rules no matter how stupid they might be.  We are watching the systemic destruction of thousands of them just now as part of our Covid response for goodness sake.

If it were not for the limelight draw of a Brexit headline this story would ordinarily make the rarely read local press mid-paper business column.

Since 2016 the Brexit arguments have all been philosophical and abstract. Tonight at 11:30 the country enters the realm of empirical Brexit science.

Let's see how the abstract theories hold out.
