What's this then?

Not strictly sporting but found whilst shooting on a Wiltshire field.

Despite the appearance, it doesn't seem to be metallic as it doesn't respond to a magnet.

I remember finding two of these as a child and never found out what they are.

Any ideas?

It looks like a fossil of some kind. Similar to a fossilised sea urchin (known locally as a Shepherd`s Crown)but without the markings on the top.

Some form of shell maybe ?

It's half an iron pyrite nodule. Was the filed flinty and chalky?

Thank you, i think that's spot on. I don't specifically recall but I imagine it was chalky being in the Wiltshire downs.

This was also in the same field.

I am certainly no expert on such things but it does in fact look like something found in rock pools today and the idea that it was perhaps a fossil of such seems to fit my thoughts. I think Ditchie may have hit the nail.

After Windswept's suggestion above, i googled Iron Pyrite Nodule and found this article which is quite interesting, if a little dry, and has a photo of something very similar. The Many Faces of Fool's Gold | American Scientist
