Sonic Boom!!!

Thought the windows where going to shatter this afternoon. Massive explosion type sound, jesus was it loud. Went out front to see if there was any smoke because it sounded really close. Quite a few others where out looking around but nothing to see.

Apparently it was two Euro fighters scrambled from an Airbase in Cambridge to intercept a Jet that had lost communications, They escorted it to Stanstead.

Never heard a Sonic boom before, And I'm in Essex so what that sounded like in Cambridge I wouldn't like to know. It was heard as far in as Barking and East Ham.

It did sound like one hell of an explosion though.

I understand they are allowed to go through the barrier at the earliest they can get the speed up which means they are often still at relatively low altitude.  Only ever heard it down in South Wales occasionally when Concord opened the throttles.

Yes they normally bounce Peterborough and we hear it, but not today!

it was JAYMO ...getting a bit of practice in...he forgot to turn the radio on................and his handbrake was stuck on

Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve had to apologise for missing a few calls or incorrect frequency selected.

Handbrake, most useless thing as I’ve found it doesn’t work very well whilst airborne.

Had a locked on brake on landing into Stansted once, one hell of a cloud of smoke and not a healthy looking tyre either!!!

I experienced the awesome power of one of those jets at an air show a few years back.  The sonic force of those engines actually makes your insides jiggle about, a very weird feeling!

During the Gulf war they used to fly hard and low over Bagdad once an hour during the night to keep everyone awake. Once a couple of those have gone over your house at what sounds like roof top level you don't just roll over and go back to sleep. After a couple of nights everyone was exhausted and totally demoralised

Now maverick has a handbrake on his plane, he pulls it plane slows up fast and he jumps up for other plane to fly under him.

Take your plane back jaymo if it don't have one, how on earth are you going to stop it in the air to let another plane past. Jeez they don't think of everything do they these young designers.

Got a handbrake- just not effective whilst airborne. It’s also called the Emergency parking brake and for hydraulic failure gives you a limited amount of applications. Problem is the anti-skid is non functioning and it’s easy to burst a tyre or four ( they replicate it in the Sim).

But, like Mav, we do have ‘air brakes’ which are deployed in stages when required- either to aid a descent or slow down quicker than normal.

Full speedbrake shakes the the whole airframe rather impressively and can produce some worried passenger faces 🙂
