Impossible.

Some would say 34g is the minimum for crows so for geese 40g at least should be used.

Nicely done and....

........the 16 will kill just as cleanly if its in the pattern. I have two, a old side by and a Remy 1100. The 1100 has killed a few Canadas for me over the years.

That's great shooting. And I've seen some people use 36g 4s and 5s for driven pheasant! seen a couple with chunks blew out of them before.

What is your gun and chokes and how did the cartridges feel through it? I've tried a cheap 32g 3 steel through my sarasketa with half and full and they weren't any more punchy than a 32g lead cartridge

Lovely photo and excellent shooting by any ones standard Jim .

I have only shot a 16 gauge a couple of times , my boss had a Woodward sxs 16g that he used to teach his nieces and nephews  , a fantastic gun that handled as good as any 12g I have handled and shot with .

Maybe when my guns become to heavy with my aging body I might well consider a 16g , although it won't be a Woodward as I only have very short pockets

Good luck for the rest of the season hope to see some more pictures.

Well done that man, where did you get the carts, i have discovered i rather enjoy sitting near ponds watching the sun go down, oh and the odd duck coming in.

looking for a good wildfowling steel cartridge for a 16g. mallard and teal mainly.

I have a box of bismuth but they are eye wateringly expensive especially when you shoot as badly as i do.....

Hi, the gun is a Lincoln fixed 1/4. 1/2 chokes, cartridges were factory clever mirage 24gram #3, ,  Jim.

Those Clever Mirage, were they HP Steel or do they do ordinary steel only I had a slab of 16g Mirage HP steel but did not fancy using them in my Lincoln. However, I’ve been told rightly or wrongly that they would have been OK to use up to half choke.

Nice trip out by the way.

I would eat my hat (and indeed yours!) if they are not also suitable through full.

Excellent stuff, Jim.

I may start using smaller gauges a bit more. I took my moderated 20 out on Monday to try for some inland pinks - having never fired a shot at geese with a 20 before. I managed to get at least one with it, using some 36gm hw13 4s. I also fulfilled a challenge to myself of killing pinks with a 10 and a 12 that morning. I scored a triple of pinks with the 10 and large steel, whilst some 30-32gm tss 7s made easy work of high pinks with the 12.

Thank god I found those pinks feeding locally whilst I was out dog training!!

You just need the 16, 28 and .410 to complete the goose set 😂

I might need to rob some of those wads back, once this lockdown is over I can get my "new" 20 ( well hers really!)

Well done and good photo, I had a couple of seasons on pinks along the Norfolk coast on the marshes, I spent good money on an Escort magnum 3.5" and cried when I had to pay for the cartridges, cant remember the shot weight but they were 3.5" steel 3's, took a few high birds and one afternoon managed my 6 bag limit, but I lost interest in sitting out in the cold and sometimes very dark , wet and muddy marshes.

I am a pigeon man at heart and prefer a well sheltered hide, preferably with the sun on my back and a much easier target. but I still get a thrill when the pinks fly over , I even have my caller in the bag and give them a call just for a reaction, wish I could do the same with the pigeons.😄
