If you've not done this before, a tip assuming that you're checking the pattern density and not gun fit - its better to do one thing at a time unless you have a proper 6ft square plate.. You're going to need an aiming point - on average this is best placed a couple of inches below centre - which if left in place when assessing the pattern will do its damnedest to convince your subconscious that things are better than they are. Use some tape after getting shot of most of the 'sticky' so that it just stays in place - if it falls off when the pellets strike, so much the better as it saves you removing it. Now you can look at the pattern and assess its centre for your 30" circle without having your eyes swayed because this does not coincide with your aiming point or the mean point of impact that you prefer if different.
