Computer/Internet Connection

When using my computer, every now and then, the internet goes down (I can still get a signal on my mobile phone using the WiFi) This only lasts a minute or two and happens when I log into a different site, and not while I am actually doing something, if that makes sense. It's more of a nuisance than a problem.

I ran a diagnostic check and a message read:  Your computer appears to be correctly figured, but the device or resource (Primary DNS Server) is not responding.

Any thoughts?

If your DNS is set to your router it'll be an issue with the Wi-Fi. If DNS is set to an external source it could be that.

Assuming you're using a PC:

Win+R

Type "cmd" and press enter (no quotes)

In that black box type "ipconfig /all"

If your IP, Default gateway and DNS are on the same range - 192.168.1.x for example -  then  you're using your router's DNS

Thanks. I'll try it now, although I may never get back on here again! :)

Update: I typed in CMD /enter and a small black box came on the screen. It read: Microsoft Windows etc.

C:\users\valleyboy> (flashing cursor)

Do I type in ipconfig/all after this?

Yes with a space between ipconfig and /

Valleyboy is your user name. As you are running that command logged in to the machine as that user.

You can do ipconfig /flushdns too

Any problems and I have mine checked over.... in fact I have it checked anyway once or twice a year.  Computer specialist comes in spends an hour playing with it and I give him £20 and sometimes a brace of pheasants for his trouble. He irons out all and any likely glitches.  Have done this for ten years or more now.

Must be someone similae living near you.

Good idea, I'll check on that. There are a few other small issues that could be sorted. I was thinking of putting my computer back to factory settings then re-installing the programs I have on it.

After entering the ipconfig/all a list of various settings came up. I noticed: IP Routing Enabled - No   WINS Proxy enabled - No

I'm not sure if this is supposed to state that?

Who is your internet provider now? Some providers has issues when their DNS servers are being hit (your router will refer to those DNS servers

For IPCONFIG /ALL do you have the same ip address (numbers with dots between) for the default gateway and DNS (as asked by another member)? if not what are they

You can hard code another DNS address (like Google or OpenDNS) in your local settings but this can be a bit complex to do if you have very limited skills but if you can follow pictures https://www.windowscentral.com/how-change-your-pcs-dns-settings-windows-10

If you aren't using Windows 10 just search "how to set DNS on Windows X" where X is the windows version that you have

Change the DNS and then see if your issue carries on - if it does give me a shout with the next steps to take

Thanks for the advice. It's over my head to be honest, but I will look into getting the computer sorted out. I may even buy a new one as this one is old.

Ipconfig /all will return everything. Leaving /all off will show you your Internet address, the routers and the gateway. Id run Ioconfig /flushdns aswell.

The DNS - domain name system, resolves the website names, so Google.co.uk is in fact 8.8.8.8 as an ip address, but its all set out so us humans can type a word and not numbers.

So your internet providers DNS sever is possibly playing up. Meaning that when you try to go somewhere it cannot resolve the command you have sent it.

Sometimes resetting the router can sort this, so power off and power out. Then 5/10 minutes later power back on.

I will do, but I have to wait another week as it's new and according to the instructions etc, Vodafone (my ISP) are checking/tweaking it during the first 4 weeks.

You just told me why its not working... Vodafone, get onto them and tell them you're having issues if its a new router.

As @ShootingEggand @discobob have already said, it sounds like Vodafone’s DNS servers are slow. I had exactly the same with Plusnet.

I went round and round with engineer visits, new routers, new micro filters all driven by Plusnet who refused to admit it was their service that was the problem.

In the end I heard about OpenDNS on a forum and updated the DNS IP address on the router and BOOM, internet issues gone.

I had exactly the same issues as you with browser hanging when loading a new page. Infuriating!

I'll be onto them tomorrow morning. :good:
