Don’t laugh, I think I want a Golden Doodle

So, our 13 year old cocker died in lockdown 1.0. It was a stroke and super quick. She was the most amazing dog and can never be replaced.

Some of the advice I had was not to have the same breed twice - that works for me, and I appreciate it won’t work for everyone, however, for me, I don’t feel that I’m betraying the memory of what was a perfect dog.

So, time has passed and it’s time.

I am pretty open minded because I think all dogs are fantastic creatures, however, this is a pet / part of the family, will be living indoors and the wife has rules - tactile coat, doesn’t drop hair and does as it’s told are top of the list.

My only rule is ‘no escape artists’ which rules out most terriers at the front door. My best mate has 2 jack Russell cross, and despite having them for a decade and living off chicken breast, if he opens the front door without first corralling them in, then they’d be off.

It appears that because of lockdown it’s almost impossible to get any dog now, so what’s about? I’m open to suggestions.

The problem with the designer cross breeds is (in my opinion) you are fuelling dog theft and puppy farming

controversial view I know

get a pedigree and a new hoover

have a golden retriever

Yes, I think having a dog stolen must be one of the worst things to happen to someone and because dogs are ‘chattels’ in the law, it’s up there with nicking a lawnmower, except that most people don’t have £3k lawnmowers or a litter of £3k lawnmowers. The penalty for dog theft does not meet the crime and needs looking at.

And yes, I fully take onboard your suggestion to look at a lab / goldie and that is out of sheer pragmatism (waiting time and cost).

I was saying only the other day that if I told my now deceased grandfather that in the future people would pay upto £4K for a mongrel and £5 for a cup of coffee 😆

What type of shooting do you do?  Walked up/rough/decoying ?

How will the dog be housed?   In the home with you ?

Do you have the facilities and time to give plenty of free exercise ?   They need to run free as much as possible.

I had viszlas for 30yrs and they are fantastic dogs, but if you cannot cover those questions then don't buy one.

I think I identify with your late grandfather because I wouldn't pay that either...😄

I got lucky with my new pup - After several opportunities fell through, one of the fellas i shoot with had a litter and while not exactly cheap, he at least used a bit of lube!!

If you're happy to have your pants pulled down on price, that's fine, but breeders can't keep up with demand and every other doodle owner i talk to over the park is looking at breeding their mongrel with another mongrel at the earliest opportunity to get on what is a very lucrative bandwagon.

Think my advice for anyone would be to wait a very short while - Battersea is going to be absolutely chock full of rejected teenagers when we're all vaccinated and normality begins to resume.

If you're not going to shoot over it, may i suggest a staffie - Genuinely one of the best pound for pound family dogs out there

If you want a working dog, picking a well bred pup just gives you a better chance of having a good dog at the end of your training.

Whilst I am sure labradoodles and goldendoodles are nice dogs, I get the jist that the people breeding them are not picking well bred working dogs fit for the job at hand, and hand picking good studs that make a good match for the bitch they want to breed.

Rather I suspect people (especially at the moment) are throwing together absolutely anything they can get their hands on.

I do have a friend who breeds working line Golden Retrievers. I don't believe they have put their prices up, although Golden's were more expensive than Lab's to begin with. I know a few breeders that were charging about £1500 before lockdown.

If you want a working bred Golden Retriever and want my mates details let me know, they are planning to breed a bitch at the end of the year, so will be ready into the start of 2022. I know for a fact they will be well handled and socialised, although I appreciate it is a bit of a wait.

I am with this guy at the moment it’s supply & demand give it six months & I can bet you the price of puppies will crash, there is going to be a big problem soon at dog shelters once we get back to normal.

She is an 8 week Golden Doodle aka Golden Poo - mum’s a goldie and dad’s a standard poodle.

Mum was there and is a lovely docile Golden Retriever - when we first arrived, mum was pleased to see us, but when we were still holding the puppy we had chosen 10 minutes later she knew - it wasn’t a ‘sulk’, it was more a sadness that came over her. It was a strange moment alright.

I have probably seen them all from supposed trained spaniels to untrained labradors and everyhting wlse in between. Two of the best hunt/retrieve dogs I have shot over was a Welsh sheep dog and a rough haired Jack Russell. Both would hunt a wood with the best of them and respond to orders, retrieving to hand without a mark  Two of the worst where two springers supposedly field trial trained which wouldn't pass wind without asking permission and a totally out of control labrador who's owner should have been shot at dawn, because it was a super looking dog let down by a pathetic owner.   Given time and patience it is quite possible to make a good every day shooting pal out of any breed.

Probably the most fun I have ever had with hunting dogs is with our two cattle corgis who just loved to go rabbiting with me back in the 50s.

My sisters got a golden poo..... good luck you are going to need it! Take the slightly nuts cockerpoo you’ve just had and make it a lot bigger.  This year it’s perfect for collecting mud and you will be on first names with your groomer as they need regular haircuts and there is a lot of it to do!

My Mrs wanted a cockerpoo but everyone we saw is a yappy annoying hyperactive dog, she soon changed her mind thankfully.
