Wheel chair access picnic bench

This week at work I've been doing short hours into the evening which cancels out doing my usual of whatever we normally do in winter. Servicing the tools mainly. But the powers to be have bought a new workshop, I've been dumped in the old one and asked to come up with ideas and make some wheelchair accessible picnic tables. Bare in mind I'm alright at most practical stuff, but i aint a chippy, so if anybodys got a disabled family member wheelchair bound, if I can make one so can you.

If you've any thoughts or advice, I'll change my plans when I get back in in 2 weeks time as I'm off to look after the boy for half term.

Great idea.Never seen one like it anywhere.

Usually they just extend the ends so they overhang, or they make 2 tables and make the top so long joined inbetween it's about 12ft long. That's alright for a pub, but not something I wanted in one of our open spaces.

Ive kept it simple as I can, 800 height, most angles are 30° ish and 1800mm long. I'm hoping (as I didn't have one to hand) that the wheelchair will fit in the space, I've allowed a gap of 900mm as I made the seat on the right shorter.

If anybody has a wheel chair to hand and could say that would be enough room I'd appreciate it 👍

Strimmer - that's a brilliant design.... I may have to poach it!  900mm is brilliant for a wheelchair, most chairs are suitable to fit through a standard door width of 760mm so the spare 140mm goes to save rapped knuckles whilst manoeuvring in an out of place.  My wife uses a chair and she gives it the thumbs up 👍

Thats what I was hoping, to make it wide enough not to trap the fingers. I also cut the nuts and bolts off and sanded the edges so they are smooth, just got too sand the edges on the table top  boards, then 3 coats of sadolin and it will be out.

Tbh I've seen people advertising picnic tables for £600+ which are similar or the overhang type, I reckon all in if you made this yourself its roughly £150 all in and it's proper treated timber that should last a few years.

Ill put a cutting list up when I get back into work next Monday for anybody that wants to use the plans, I've got to make one anyway for work as they want to make more in the future to that spec. 👍
