Handing weapons to local police

Hi all hope all is well.

Iv had some serious issues with obtaining my medical proforma and my surgery being extremely unhelpful. My shotgun licence expires the 1st of March and I doubt I'll have my medical by then. I send my renewal off stating medical to follow but it was returned asking to resend when I have a medical. Its been going on for weeks and weeks

Looks like I may have to surrender my guns until this is all sorted and I'm wondering if anyone has handed in their weapons to a local police station at all.

Many thanks

Why can you not use an independent GP for your medical report? think they charge £50.

I would contact your fire arms department and explain the situation and ask for a temporary ticket.

I have done this but my gp raised concerns about the amount of information they were asking for from my gp they strongly advised that I shouldn't do. But then they won't do it themselves until it suites them. Its a complete joke.

I'm afraid the police will not accept your gun. They will refer you to a RFD to store them until your certificate gets issued.

I was able to hand mine in when I was running out of time getting my permissions in order after a landowner had passed away. Where I am in northern ireland things may be handled differently but the one caveat seems to be you get 21 days or your guns may be disposed of

Lodge the guns with a local RFD and them get your form done by Medcet for I think £60. They basically set up to do firearms application where the GP was being difficult / rip off prices.

They basically request your medical records from the GP the same as anyone who would normally request them such as life insurance types do an assessment against the criteria the police need confirmation on and send you the signed form back.

It worked for a friend of mine who wanted an initial grant  his GP took over 7 months and still didn't do the form. Medcert took a couple of months and most of the the delay was the GP actually sending the records across but Medcert were good over this as well and contently chased the GP for the info.

I am not familiar with the procedure when using an independent GP, but I am sure others on here are, as far as I know, if you are registered online with your own GP you can request full access to your medical records which you can down load and print out and send to the independent GP.

Someone who as been through the procedure will be along to guide you through it.

Have you contacted your issuing force and explained the situation, I am sure you could get a temporary ticket to cover you while this is on going, on my last renewal I asked for a temporary ticket to cover me for the six weeks expected delay for my renewal.

My force is Staffs/West Midlands.

To be honest I would go to great lengths not to hand my guns to the local police for any type of storage. After first hand seeing the damaged caused to returned guns when someone got their ticket back after it was revoked due to malicious allegations paying the local RFD to store its a much better option.

I thought BASC had a way around this.   Just ask your GP for a printout of your medical records, it takes seconds.  I recently went privately for a check up and my Dr printed the records there and then for me to take for the heart specialists information.  Three or four taps on the key board and the computer printed the whole record in seconds.

I do believe that your Doctor has to provide this if you request it and it basically costs them a sheet of paper.

Certainly DO NOT hand your guns to the police.  I am an ex police officer in the good old days but even then retained property was just stacked in a locked storage room, sometimes piled one on the other.

As has been said rfd every time to store your firearms, police will be painful even if they do not get damaged you will only get them back at their convenience.

Your registered GP. Cannot refuse a data protection act freedom of information request to provide Medcert with the necessary information. Not all of which is likely to be held digitally online. Your GP may not like providing a copy of all the records and for free so tell them to stop moaning and just do the report to the police and get paid for doing so by you.

Are we ONLY talking about shotguns here??

If so - find a local SGC holder and transfer all your guns to him/her
Write "on temporary loan during period of SGC renewal" or some such on the transfer table - NOT "sold" or "given"

I'm at the FIVE MONTH stage of trying to have a rifle returned by the Police following their unlawful seizure of it - so NEVER voluntarily hand guns to the police

It must be a post code lottery with regards to how the different regional police forces deal with shotgun renewals. Staffordshire police sent me a reminder in October that my licence was due to expire at the end of November so i applied online for my renewal. Within three days a temporary licence came through the post that covered me till the end of February extending my original certificate by two months. When the police had done all there checks my certificate was granted and back dated to the original expiry date of my last certificate. How simple and effective was that. Neither have i had to pay for a doctors certificate at any time. I am in the fortunate position that if there was a problem i would transfer my guns to my son but i appreciate not everyone has that option. Surely these procedures could be standardised throughout the UK.

I’d be insisting on a temporary permit to keep hold of the guns - the requirement for the medical has been made up by the licensing force and isn’t in the guidelines (I have had to do it too for renewal having moved area) so the delay is down to their making up the rules.

I had to insist on a temporary cert when West Midlands couldn’t be bothered to renew my license in time - I ended up recording the phone call and getting the bloke to clarify that he was refusing to issue a temporary cert “because they don’t do that” and then when the recording was provided to the chief constable they miraculously found the resources to send my renewal through.

it’s a fine line between unnecessary annoying the licensing department and pushing them to make sure your rights as a license holder are not ignored. I got to the point of annoying them I think haha.

Just? £50.00 so use MedCert. Job done.

Don't hand in to police, as said.

By the way they are not weapons,,,,just guns.

Their is medcert

https://www.medcert.co.uk

and

https://firearmsmedicalreports.co.uk

Both offer the same service, details of the process is on their websites. But simply put you authorise Medcert to do a free GDPR, data protection act subject data request to your GP to get them to forward copies of all the medical records your GP holds about you to Medcert, who then produce the medical report for the Police.

As regards to needing the medical report and not being part of the process the bottom line is the firearms act empowers the Chief Officer to satisfy themselves that you are a safe and proper person to own firearms and sets no boundaries or scope on what the chief officers can do to make the decision.

Hence they are free to ignore the Home Office Guidance 2016 because it is exactly that only guidance not law.

so the police require a written report of your medical history and not a complete copy of your medical records.

All the police require is the doctor fills in a simple tick box pro-forma request stating yes or no to the following questions about the applicant

• Acute Stress Reaction or an acute reaction to the stress caused by a trauma.

• Suicidal thoughts or self-harm.

• Depression or anxiety.

• Dementia.

• Mania, bipolar disorder or a psychotic illness, or a personality disorder.

• A neurological condition: for example, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s or Huntington’s diseases, or epilepsy.

• Alcohol or drug abuse.

• Diagnosed with a terminal illness in the last 2 years.

• Any other mental or physical condition which you think may be relevant.

Don't hand your gun's to the police they'll be fit for nowt if you get them back, if they are shot guns you have try and get a mate or mates to store them for you, as for your med records ask the doctors for a copy of them which you are entitled to get free of charge, think they have to give you them within a certain time frame and then get MedCert or one of the others mentioned to do the pro-forma form.
