You saying that...I was watching some scientist on the box talking about contaminating Mars with Earths bacteria but he also said we also need to-be extremely careful when we bring back samples from Mars as it may contain bacteria????...Mars-covid??

now just image that doing the rounds on social media.

I might join Facebook,  just so that I can spread that rumour .😅

In all honesty,  I suppose that it could be possible,  but hopefully,  very very unlikely.

as they message their mates on Facebook telling them all about it.

Mustn't use Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg is one of the Bill Gates henchmen.  Messages will be intercepted and those who send them sent for immediate second vaccination.

If I remember right, I think when the brought samples back from the moon, they were very careful to keep them quarantined until they were 100% sure they were 'safe'.

If only we had a media framework which was aligned with national interest and development, I wasn't around for the first moon landings but I know the coverage, wonder and splendour of it all triggered a new generation of scientists and engineers who all dreamt for bigger and better things for our future.

Part of the issue is that films and computer games have stretched sci-fi so far that some people have lost sight of the real current technological boundary of mankind, this combined with a lot of people not even knowing what they don't know leads to a proportion of the public thinking there is nothing particularly remarkable in what has just, and is about to be, achieved.

Agreed. I recall as a kid a primary school trip to London and a visit to Heathrow to see a ‘jumbo jet’.
I don’t know how true it is, but I remember reading somewhere that NASA conceded at the time that the development and building of Concorde was on a par with putting a man on the moon. 🤷‍♂️
We seem to be very blasé about achievements these days, although the speed with which an effective vaccine has been developed has impressed me greatly.

But when I tell the story , quarantine will have failed due to radiation resistant Martian bacteria , and none of the experts will realise this until the bacteria has gotten a grip on the earth. Nobody will notice until rainfall increases , but by then it'll be too late .  If you don't believe me , just look out of the window to see if it's raining .

Amazing technological feat, I’m very confident they will find signs of life there and either way the information will be shared transparently.

The one thing I was really disappointed with was the relatively light coverage of this on the news, given all the current doom and gloom and repetitive news it was a great opportunity to engage the public and maybe trigger a few youngsters to get interested in high tech.

Good coverage in the Telegraph this morning.   The mathematics just to work this all out puts me in a spin.

😀👍

I remember our geography teacher telling us back in the early ‘70’s at school, that next time it snows we should be praying it stops, as we were heading for another ice age.
I sometime wonder how our experts would be suggesting we cope with a cooling planet rather than a warming one.

dont think your teacher is far wrong............we are approaching the next ice age.....it gets warmer first and melts the ice caps....the salinity of the ocean changes and diverts the warmer current that warms the northern hemisphere....then it gets cold.....ice age stops when precipitation builds up as snow/ice and the salinity increases and the warm current once again resumes its travel/flow to the northern hemisphere..........this also co-insides with the occilation of the tilt of the earth........................

so i understand..

I think the fact there’s been nothing like it since highlights how remarkable Concorde was.

Agree on the vaccine too.

Indeed. Very smart PhDs dedicate their working lives to that kind of math.

You mean like they told us back in the late 60s we would be in an ice age by 2010.

Yip - move the goalposts to fit the narrative!
Keeps the sheep occupied while the folk in charge get away with all sorts of nonsense at our expense

Keeping the topic going, a very good radio program was on earlier today about the Mars lander Beagle 2 - which was presumed lost in 2003 but has since been found on the surface having landed but only partially deployed the solar panels - so it was not able to transmit back to Earth

Plus the sun is about to enter a more dormant period with fewer sun-spot activity...

And there was me thinking the salinity of the sea was due to the Norse tale “the mill that grinds at the bottom of the sea”

good point, It wasn't that long ago that we allowed missionaries to go and help the poor natives to enjoy life, but instead we gave them a variety of diseases, who knows !
