Trichiasis - inward growing eyelashes.

I know ingrowing eye lashes as Entropion. You may be referring to something different.

My Sprocker Jasper had this. It became obvious at five months or so. He needed an operation to cut away and stitch his eye lid. It cost about £200 at the time and the operation has been a complete success with no problems since.

Thanks JDog. You could be right regarding the term, I googled ‘in growing eyelashes’. Will google ‘Entropian’.
Thankyou.

It should be a fairly straight forward op, often done as a pup if the condition is showing, and should not have any issues there after.

I THINK a dog that's had it should never be bred from as it's a hereditary condition.

Thanks. I’m a little uncertain as now, having googled both terms again, to what exactly the dog has been treated for, but I’ll be able to clear that up when I next speak to the owner.

He was initially quoted £1000 per eye, and when he told them that wasn’t going to happen, the operation was carried out for £300.
The dog has been left with gaping eye sockets, as if a ‘dart’ ( as in a sewing dart)  has been removed from the bottom outer edge of each eye.
The operation was over a month ago and although the dog can close its eyes, the owner hasn’t been able to take his dog out since as it risks wind blown debris being blown into the eyes.
It looks horrendous, with gaping pink sockets on show. The dog is otherwise healthy and as lively as an 8 month old pup should be.
He has been back to the surgery and told them he isn’t happy by any means, and was told the dog may need another op’, which they told him was quite common. He wasn’t told this however, prior to taking the dog back after the initial op’.
He said they were very sheepish regarding their responses on questioning, especially after seeing the dog.
I strongly believe they have botched it, as does he, and I’ve urged him to get a second opinion as I think it will take cosmetic surgery to put this right.
None of this is made easier by the fact he knows well, those in the practise ( as do I ) ; small rural communities have drawbacks as well.
Anyhow, I’ll ask him exactly what his dog was treated for when I talk to him later.
There is no history of this ailment in either lines and all other six dogs in the litter are fine. It’s a rum un, and a crying shame if it can’t be rectified.

Entropion - eye lids

Trichiasis - eye lashes

Two different things.

Ingrowing eye lashes are most likely hereditary as my old bitch had it & most of her kids / grand kids also have it, it'd be fairly common in Labradors. I see a BVA eye specialist for annual eye tests & on her advise have never done anything about it.

I had a cocker which two vets told me had entropion, I took him to the eye specialist & she said the vets were wrong, he had long eye lashes. As someone else has posted, get specialist advice.
