Before he met her, Harry was a popular and liked member of the RF, with an easy, good humoured and friendly public persona - albeit there were occasional 'lapses' (e.g. the German WW2 uniform, a few rather heavy parties etc.), they were mainly overlooked. When she came on the scene, she initially seemed to fit in and enjoy the spotlight. The first I recall going wrong was when being filmed at a garden party in the palace footage of the two of them walking up to Prince Charles, saying a few words and then just walking out. Protocol dictates you don't leave anything before the Queen. He would have known that. Then there were lots of other incidents, high staff turnover, allegations of bullying, troubles on various overseas trips ...... I see it very much a matter of won't. We know he 'can' do the job (he was born into it after all) if he wants to - and she's just an actress and therefore should be able to 'play the part'. If he had gone ahead under disclosure he would have to hand over all his documents, and you can bet that there was stuff there his team knew could be used against him. He tried to play poker get the judge to decide quickly or hope the newspaper caved in, unfortunately he was only good at snap not poker.
