W204 c220 cdi

Morning all, 

I’m  going to look at a a 2011 c220 Mercedes this afternoon, the cars up for a decent price and looks in good condition but has 190,000 miles on it. 
 

I know that it’s all down to maintenance and from what I’ve seen this car has good service history but I’ll check that when I go to view it. 
 

would this mileage put anyone off or will it be good for another 200k?

strong engine, they normally good if its been properly maintained, if looking at a those kind of high miles I would be looking for a younger one 4 years old max with full Merc history,

Really depends on how the mileage has been done, if it's been mainly A roads and motorway driving it might be a very good car. The things i would be wanting to know are when was the timing belt and water pump last changed and has it had it's clutch and dual mass flywheel changed. The flywheel in particular can be a VERY expensive replacement.... found that out with my last car, £750 for the flywheel alone

Would put me off I’m afraid , regardless of service history , approx twice average mileage for year , check reason for this if it’s done lots of motorway miles not so bad if it’s been a taxi with lots of stop /starts not so good 

if it was a hgv not a problem Diesel engine , governed speed , long journeys ,regular servicing but a car to me ! I’d swerve it unless it’s an absolute give away price

Looking at the mot history it done 110,000 before it’s first mot so I’d imagine motorway miles company car etc. 
apparently it had its belt/chain done at 130,000 but I’ll be checking the receipts for that. 
Auto so no clutch and I’d imagine the flywheel won’t get as much abuse as on a manual?

Looks like it’s first 3-4 years are when it’s covered it’s miles, 110,000 before it’s first test at 3 years old. 
 

the only reason I’m looking is that’s it’s up for £3300 and is in the same price range as plain c200 with no extras but this has most of the toys fitted

Hearing that I think I would swerve it , sounds like it may have been a lease car usually on a three year deal , so 37000 miles each year is quite hefty ! , try not to get swayed by all the extras it’s the main items you need to check as previously said gearbox , waterpump , etc , at the end of the day if it’s what you want go for it , German engineering is fantastic but that can come at a cost over parts etc

Don’t forget there is more to a car than just the engine. Everything else will be worn out as well. Suspension, doors, seats, etc, etc.

Just on the subject of the auto box, they may or may not have the same kind of flywheel set up but with that mileage I would be wanting some sort of service history on the gearbox itself, oil changes etc. If someone tries to say that an auto box is a sealed unit and "lubricated for life" run a mile, don't even try to slap sense into them as it won't be worth it

You are supposed to change the gearbox fluid and service the  auto gearbox on a RWD merc every 60,000. Very few ever get done

Thanks all, the gearbox service was on my check list but in the end I told the seller I’d give it a miss. 
 

im just going to wait a while and buy a newer low mileage one for around £8-9k

I've got one the same year. Mate of mine who is a merc specialist reckons they are excellent engines if theyve had regular services. Same engine as the Sprinter vans and they'll do mega mileage no problem

Depending where you are in the country , you could do worse than check out mercland in Nuneaton.

Even though you havent gone for the car people shouldnt be fooled by the motorway miles idea, there is no way of proving how the miles have been done. 35,000 miles a year is only 145 miles a day (5 days a week 48 week a year) and that can easily be covered without going near a motorway if out sales rep'ing etc.
