On BBC S West news this morning it was reported that one part of the proposed Bill to which the protesters objected was making Trespass a criminal offence. The view of the protesters is that it is their legal right to Trespass !!!

in Bristol this is totally different these idiots get away with it

Soon we won't have to worry  when the home secretary fills up Euro star with illegals

we will be a minority race  and be able to do what ever we like and say can't touch us

I have refrained from entering this topic because having actually been in the front line of a REAL riot in Liverpool in 1981, where a Police Officer actually died, I get so wound up when idiots are critical of the FEW Police Officers who are left, trying their best to restore Law and Order in an impossible situation. IF Officers start to make arrests, it takes 2 of them to escort that prisoner to wherever the vehicles are parked. That has to be far enough away from the 'front line' in order to try and prevent them being torched. So for every person arrested 2 Officers are taken away from where they are most needed. Those prisoners AND their 2 Officers for each one are eventually taken to a Police Station. Common sense has to prevail. If you owned property around the scene of the riot, you would want it protecting. Far better to keep what resources you have, where they are most needed.  Better to study CCTV and other camera footage at a later date and then publish the pictures on ALL media. This happened in Manchester a few years ago and a lot of those involved handed themselves in after their picture was shown in the media. The Courts, I recall handed out some stiff sentences after that incident. I cringe when I see Officers with graffiti sprayed on their riot shields. We created a 'sterile' area of some 6 feet (sorry 2 metres) between us and 'them'. Anyone entering that area was hit with the bottom edge of the shield  across their shins. I do not recall any coming back for seconds  !  We also had 'snatch' squads of 5 Officers with short shields, if anyone was identified with petrol bomb or weapons, the front line would part, and the snatch squad did just that, snatched  !  Of course there were not the CCTV or handheld camera's (phones) about then. They only locked up 4 on the night of the 'vigil' and the crowds were screaming for the resignation of the Chief, I hate to think what the consequences of mass arrests (had it been remotely possible) would be. The resignation of the ENTIRE Force, no doubt.

You are so right about James Anderton, in 1981, Manchester had some copy cat disturbances akin to Liverpool. He sent his troops in with instructions to er.....sort it.  They lasted 3 nights, little damage and few arrests. Just rather full A & E's locally.................sorted  !   Oh, and by the way, I too am an Advanced Police Driver who does not have a degree.   😛

James Anderton was my kind of Police Chief. We need a few like him.

James Anderton honestly!! My grandfather was a sergeant in the  Manchester police force when Anderton and stalker both joined as probabinarey constables. He actually had each of them walking the beat with him.  In later years he said I never trusted the pair of them. At my grandfather's funeral Anderton was present but he was not asked to attend the wake but stalker was and did attend. I spent a while talking to stalker at the wake and myself my father(ado fireman) uncle (raf pilot 617 Sqn) we all agreed that the pair of them were never too be trusted. How true did that turn out to be.

The same Anderton, some 12 months after the Liverpool riots did the presentation after a Manchester Police clay pigeon shoot. He searched out the Merseyside team and bought each of us a drink, telling us we deserved it.  Like him or loathe him, he was a 'Bobby's Boss' .

Because God told him to, I guess. About that time he started to go off the rails.

I understand they have changed the criteria, in the last couple of years.

Not sure what you mean. I wasn't aware they were untrustworthy.

But they haven't. You don't need a degree to be an advanced police driver. You can think what you like but I know you are wrong on it. If they did the last 3 I sent on oe, all within the last year and one only a month or so ago, wouldn't have been accepted and none have a degree. Nor does the form require it. No one requires it. Just you.

Westley and GingerCat - I had been told by a former employee that the criteria that there was a degree requirement for advanced / surveillance driver training. I accept that my information was incorrect. Apologies to the two named, if it appeared I didn't accept what they said.

I shall be speaking to Dave quite soon. 🙂

Maybe God told him to send in his troops and 'sort' the rioters too. It took them 3 nights. It took us 3 MONTHS and a lot of outside assistance from other Forces and it followed on for the duration of the summer for the next 2 years too. Mind you we just stood and took it, a bit like the present day Police are having to do.  You have a hell of a job throwing things and kicking riot shields IF you are running away  !!

We maybe need to remember that all police behaviour is politically controlled and micromanaged?

I disagree slightly, a lot of it is down to lack of numbers. My argument all along is why pay a man to be on the dole when for virtually the same money you could have him in a uniform.

Firstly, almost all on the dole, no one would want in a uniform.

Secondly, most on the dole do not want to work, never mind doing a job where they may be put in harms way.

It is vital that we start using water cannons, due to the numbers involved and make sure there is some strong dye in the mix that wont wash out in a week. That way we could easily identify whose precious little princess are really involved in this disgraceful behavior. Mummy and Daddy might curb their allowances  then. Water cannon use does work and most of them look like they could use a good scub down with the rough end of a kerb edge. From  Auntie.

Good post, much easier to be an armchair Bobby on PW than turn up at a riot night after night.

We had riots in Liverpool when that cockney drug dealer Mark Duggan decided to kill himself by proxy. He had never been to Liverpool but those who want an excuse to riot will find one. I believe in the joint enterprise law. It should be applied more widely by the CPS. Anyone who was present at a riot or encouraged the rioting is guilty of the most serious crime committed at that riot.

Not a good image for the police to be lying

True, but the fact that injuries were less severe than originally thought is no defence for rioting and destroying property.  In fact we should be thankful that there weren't more serious injuries (or worse in view of apparent attempts to ignite occupied vehicles).

Standing aside and allowing that statue to be pulled down last year - followed by vaguely supportive comments for the action from persons in authority (namely Bristol's mayor) - has sent the wrong message and made Bristol a venue to unlawful and violent rioting forms of 'protest' - or perhaps more correctly 'anarchy'.

i agree but the fact that they lied makes you think what other lies they have told and to go in  front of the media and say it on camera its no wonder people don't trust them
