Well, I wonder where this is going?

Lots of rumours about mothballing all or some of our Main Battle Tanks.

Plenty of expectation of a cut to the Army of some 10 000 soldiers.

Technology seems to be in the mix too.

I have not yet heard anything with regard to our Nuclear Commitment, can we as a country afford to be in that game any more?

I suspect realism has hit home in that less recruitment is likely because so few youth will volunteer now that serving the country has become almost a hate crime to many and being potentially prosecuted for following orders. Also we don't have a surplus of youth with patriotic feelings about this country - though plenty will have patriotic feelings for another country and culture.

I don't think we can afford not to maintain a protective nuclear shield.

Will be all.about tech reduction on squaddy recruitment, tbh when was the last full on land war requiring thousands of troops, most is air to ground attacks SF infiltration and intelligence gathering, Russia and China can easily hit us with a computer virus tech war Russia with fuel.imbargos in there gas lines, America is always happy to throw the big guns in when in suites them and we will always pay tax payers money to them.to help out when required

Smaller and more specialised forces for limited international deployments backed up by refreshed Trident would be my guess.

Which feels quite the gamble given the way things seem to be shaping up with Russia and China.

Yes, the ability to take and hold a small town will be a most useful way of putting our newly named "Special Forces" out there.

As has been said above, time to look inwards and stop trying to influence the rest of the world other than maintaining a nuclear deterrent.

I agree with that philosophy. I would go even beyond what we are already proposing. I would withdraw every military unit out of Europe. Let them defend themselves.

It's all good saying we should "keep our noses out", but if you look at why we are involved its to keep people like the Russian's from having control of the country etc.

If people think it's wise for us to take a back seat whilst other countries that would happily see us come to harm start to dominate globally then they must have lost it.

I agree with this.

We should be building our milatry up and at the end of the day, the only way to truly win a conventional war is good old boots on the ground unfortunately.

There’s no doubt the future is on tech.

These days the Russians and Chinese can do more damage to our country by putting a virus into a bunch of distribution factories and costing us a fortune in issues than dropping a bomb on the factory.

If it ever does come to dropping bombs, the future will involve a bunch of pilots sat in the U.K. flying drones thousands of miles away.

Small, rapidly mobile and highly skilled forces with very high levels of tech support will likely be the future unless there is a major shift in world politics.

I doubt we'll ever have a big armed forces again,  smaller more elite units.

Just have to not stick our noses in all over the world like we have done in the past.

Sadly, we all know that politicos can't refrain from that because it's other peoples money and lives?

Nuclear option is never an option as the areas bombed are not fit for anything to follow such as occupation etc?
