You have to have a vacant slot on your licence before you can purchase.  Sooooo, if you see something you really want, generally you have to sell what you have first.

No, that does not give you the right to replace the sold item. 
You must apply for a variation in order to have a “vacant slot”.

My mistake, i thought you could replace like for like.
