This has been bubbling along in the background for sometime. Joe McCann was killed in 1972 after resisting arrest. The two soldiers don't deny they shot him, but they claimed they acted lawfully. They've been formally acquitted after the prosecutions case collapsed

Joe McCann: Trial of two soldiers collapses - BBC News

McCann was part of the official IRA. He was killed in April 1972, but the evidence relied heavily on testimonies given in 2010 Historical Enquiries Team, but that evidence was ruled inadmissible

And where are the two men sentenced for the murder of the two poor b's Derek Woods and David Howes from the Royal Signals that were murdered in 1988? Released in 1998! The "Good Friday Agreement" should have granted amnesty for any future proceedings against members of the British Army also for all crimes committed (or alleged to have been committed) before 1998...including the (so called) "Bloody Sunday" killings.

Should never have been in court in the first place.A disgrace and Gov should be ashamed of themselves.

Agreed.

And credit to Jonny Mercer MP who resigned from the cabinet to stand by the two soldiers. A rare thing, a member of parliament with honour and integrity.

Agreed.

The terrorists orgnishions clamed there was a war and their members were soldiers, but when one of them was killed they cried foul you can't have it both ways. He was a well known killer he ignored a challenge and was shot, their actions probably saved lives a medal would have being more appropriate.

I’m just watching a film called 71 on Amazon Prime about a soldier that accidentally gets left behind ‘enemy lines’ in Ireland when deployed there.

It’s a good watch to be fair.

Yes, a good film, shows the good and bad on both sides.

A good watch.

The problem is that soldiers are trained to be soldiers - Not police.   They should never have been put in the position that they found them selves in.   If it was essential that the army was used - and it probably was at the time - then the rules of engagement should have been much clearer.   Trouble is that this will all rise up again and again when the next bloke is charged fifty years after the event.   Until the politicians face up to their obligations this will go on and on.

Unfortunately politicians have used armed forces as scapegoats since politicians came into existence.

As for the rest ,it`s very easy to say what should or should not have happened  when you are not on the spot in an environment of fear and confrontation.

These cases must stop!

It seems PigeonWatch has more power than it realises! The government is looking to include a ban on prosecutions for British soldiers for actions done during the troubles.

The only issue with that is it will apply to terrorist actions as well, that is equating security forces with terrorist.

The terrorists will never be brought to justice whichever way. Let’s accept that and then we can give our soldiers the peaceful retirement they deserve.

Its not the matter of terrorists being brought to justice, a amnesty for both its equating security force actions with terrorist actions.
