I had a school mate, joined the Marines, went AWOL to the Foreign Legion, returned, Jailed, then last I knew he was apparently SBS!!

there was a bloke who used my local yrs ago wanted to join the Foreign Legion ,he had money problems  he owed Grattons catalouges £100 , thats true !

A bunch of smelly fishermen and two French police boats decided to square up to the MIGHT of the Royal Navy off the port of St Helier, Jersey today (OK, we sent two small gunships).  That showed 'em, huh?

Is Boris using this a a "flagship" (excuse the pun) issue to demonstrate how he's planning to remain robust over Brexit terms and is prepared to get physical?

My opinion is, because Jersey is not a regular part of Britain, but classed as a "Crown Dependency" and has therefore dictated its own policies over fishing, Boris has the escape hatch open and ready to dive through, should the excrement hit the whirly thing.

And... how childish is it for the French to say they're going to cut off Jersey's electricity supply in retaliation?!!

An interesting contrast in styles of journalism.

I actually saw the guy at Lime Street Station when he was under prisoner escort after returning from the Foreign Legion - I was going back to camp - my Dad was with me and went that guy over there is trying to get your attention. I had to flash my service ID to his escorts to speak with him!

What gives France the right to demand anything from UK, do they not know we have left Europe, stop assuming you are a world power and you have a say, you are just another part of Europe so the rules have changed for you and no beggar over here is interested in what you demand.

I didn't see the other thread before I posted this; I scanned through the topic titles but must have missed it.  I hoped - in vain it seems - that some intellectual debate may occur, but on the other thread it descended into the old "cheese eating surrender monkeys" kind of stuff quite quickly, with no real substance.

What's just happened off the shores of Jersey is a pretty big deal.  It just seems that "we" don't really have much of an opinion on the subject, in contrast to the Scotland independence issue as an example. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

The British fishermen have accused the French and Spanish fishermen of illegally overfishing in British waters for years and using illegal fishing techniques like fly shooting and pulse nets.

So now they don't like having to stick to the rules. Jersey has said catagorically that every French trawler that has submitted a proper application has been given a licence to fish.

It's like a child who hasn't got their own way having a tantrum, as long as the UK doesn't back down they will go off and sulk eventually before excepting the new norm. Yet another reason brexit needed to happen.

The French have always been very like that to do business with.  Before I retired we used to deal with them - and they were one of the most difficult 'nationalities' to deal with - partly because everything had to go their way - all 'take' and no 'give' in any negotiation.

Well that certainly fits with how macron ect have behaved during brexit negotiations.

That was my experience of them in business too
