Malinois

Hello all, we’re getting a Malinois pup from a friend of ours who is a GP dog handler. We’ve given it a lot of thought and consideration and will be training him with help from him and a lot of other experienced people we know.

I’m just wondering, especially as I know there’s a couple of current and ex GP dog handlers on here if there’s any tips you can give us, you know the sort, the ‘if I could give you one piece of advice’ sort of thing.

He will be with me every day whether at home or whilst I’m out at work - my job currently often consists of visiting contractors to assess them for EUSR and CSCS cards, sometimes alone and sometimes at their houses so it’ll be a good feeling to know I’ve got backup just in case (you’ll understand if you’re female 😂)

Any advice gratefully received. Thanks!

Speak to Chris Davies, Wirral she breeds and trains for GMP, Cheshire and Merseyside. Certainly GSD and possibly Malinois too. I can PM you her number if you want. She’s very straight talking and a proper dog person. No messing about. Makes me look like a pussy cat.

Brilliant if you wouldn’t mind! I suspect I’m overthinking things rather but I want to get this right from the off. I’ve a few contacts but the more the better - although you’ve frightened me a bit saying she makes you look like a pussy cat 😂😂

Name ideas also would be great - I wanted to call him ‘Cuddles’ but my eldest said noooooo 😂😂

There's a young lad near me in his early 20s has one called Connor, I don't think I've ever seen a dog so well behaved and under control he is a security guard that's why he has it,barks on command snarls on command but the dog is as soft as anything until told.

His dad told me he went to Liverpool for help with training it. Next time I see him pass our house I can ask who he went to if you wish.

A dog is a dog as you know, just lots of socialisation, especially with other dogs. Firm but calm training tends to work with them, get irrate and they can just keep going up and remember a tired dog is a good dog. Good luck 👍

Got to ask how's that Mali coming along, driving yoj nuts yet? 😂

Hahaha!! Got two now! They’re 10% driving me nuts and 90% amazing - they’re certainly not what I thought they would be like, I wasn’t prepared for how loyal they would be at this age already - they don’t bark at other people but after the initial wariness pretty much ignore them.

Pablo’s ears are up now too 😍😍
