Hahaha!! Got two now! They’re 10% driving me nuts and 90% amazing - they’re certainly not what I thought they would be like, I wasn’t prepared for how loyal they would be at this age already - they don’t bark at other people but after the initial wariness pretty much ignore them.

Pablo’s ears are up now too 😍😍

That sounds spot on, they're certainly confident dogs with loads of energy in my experience.

Pablo looks awesome 👌

Chica is extremely sociable with people but Pablo not so much - he’s fine if they ignore him, he’ll go and say hello of his own accord - if they try and force it or bend over us he will bark and warn them off. Such was the position we found ourselves in when we took them to a beer garden locally (as their jabs finally allowed it) and despite Pablo having a wide red lead that said CAUTION on it 🙄It seemed as if people found it a challenge and tended to try and be friends with him even though I told them to bog off 🤬 Drunk people (who are used to dogs and great dog people don’t you know because they have a Cockerpoo at home) and Malinois pups don’t necessarily mix. A lesson learnt - can’t believe people can be so sozzled at 7.30 on a Tuesday night, haven’t they got jobs to do at home?

Think I may have offended a few locals 😂

I do however teach a ‘watch me’ command rewarded with a treat with these guys when they maintained eye contact for a good length of time and I found this invaluable when deployed as people were walking past or entering the (spacious) beer garden.

All in all I was pleased with him ❤️

In hindsight I should have warned them off before they even got that close so I’ll remember that next time !

’Get two Malinois pups she said. It’ll be okay, we have cockers, Springers and a Labrador at home she said. We’re dog people she said’ 😂😂😂

I've always found dogs like that are always wary of drunk people. If he's going to just be a pet I'd definitely work on Pablos socialisation, you could ask a few strangers to him, to give him a reward so he doesn't always see strangers as bad. Also worth remembering calm training usually works much better with malinois, shout at him for barking and he's likely to fire up even more.

Some people are idiots though, they'll come straight up and try to pet a dog like that saying it's okay, I've got a dog, even when a fool can clearly see from a distance the dog isn't welcoming. I've even known drunken idiots trying to pet trained protection dogs, that definitely isn't going to end well.

Beautiful looking dogs though, keep up the good work and if you think your nuts having a couple of malis, it could always be worse, you could go to the next level and have a couple of dutch herders, they can be a real headache in the wrong hands and even in the right ones sometimes.

He’s going to be trained for personal protection and we’re hoping to do some working trials with him, a friend of mine used to train dogs for the police and she’s been extremely helpful so far. They also go to puppy classes which we’ve never done with the gundogs before but as you say with this breed it’s Uber important to socialise them well 😊

We’re getting them out and about as much as we can - it’s very odd who he seems to take exception to, 9/10 people he’s fine with and really sociable after a few minutes but for no apparent reason he’ll decide he doesn’t like the odd person, even good friends of ours!

I do distract him with a ‘watch me’ command rewarding eye contact with a treat if I see the tell tale signs coming on but in all honesty he’s improving in leaps and bounds so I’m not too concerned, I just know I can’t be complacent with him around people he doesn’t know.

Sounds like you've got it in hand, they are definitely more independent thinking than say a GSD.

If he likes the bite, don't over egg the bite work as he could become a bit bite drunk, dogs with high bite drive need to spend 90% training to control the urge to bite. But if you've got an ex police dog trainer they'll keep you right. A Mali is a different dog to a gsd, it's a bit like the reliable mondao vs a ferrari, the mallis make their decisions and act on them quicker, which means you need to be one step ahead to.

Do keep us updated 👍

They are incredible dogs, so clever! A lot of very bad bitework on that video though, they’re supposed to hold the grip and push into the bite, not tug 🙈

Never had anything to do with the breed I was absolutely amazed at them running up the wall , tree ect .

As for the "bite work " I'll go with what you say as you know way way more about the breed than me .

They are a stunning looking animal tho

All grown up!! They had their first long sends the other day (which is where you let them go and they bite and hold a decoy, in their case on a bite sleeve)

Obedience is coming on a treat, it’s not been easy but so far it’s definitely worth it!

Video of his (and my!) first ever long send! He was getting tired by this point bless him ❤️

That's a good looking dog glad he's come good for you, the lad near me with one is now thinking of a Springer to use for detecting drug's and has asked if I would help train it but to be honest I wouldn't now how to start .

It’s dead easy to start them off - way easier than the Gundog job as long as (and this is the biggie) the dog is ball crazy and environmentally unphased by anything at all 👍

If he’s NASDU then he really should have contacts already to help mind you 🤔 If he’s not NASDU he’s better off doing that and training with a trained dog before he thinks of getting his own as it’ll need to be licenced also , no mean feat in itself (I think, anyway) xx

Hows his Mali coming along?

He is registered with something because of where he works, he says he cannot tell me where but there are at least six of them doing security. His Mali is rock steady to everything but cat's the Dutch hearder is still in training I'm sure it grows an inch a day it's one hell of a beast with a huge set of teeth

He has to go somewhere in Liverpool I think for assessment with the dog.

Hes a handsome dog for sure.

Give him time and he'll be launching 6 ft from the baiter with all four feet off the ground, by then you'll spend half your time training emergency stops as he'll enjoy the bite so much. I look forwards to reading about all your headaches in future posts 😂😂😂

Headaches is right 😂😂 I’m not going to lie there’s been moments where I’ve regretted the decision to get him but everything seems to be slotting into place now 🤞🤞

Here he is at PSA training last night eyeing up and barking at the incoming decoy - this was SO much fun!

(Yes he has a prong collar on, no the lead wasn’t attached to the prong collar, it was attached to his flat. Prong collar is only there for emergency use - don’t judge me until you’ve had a high drive Mali! 😂)

Hard explain - the collar has short prongs on the inside which lie flat against the dog’s fur when there’s no pressure on it but which come into play if he’s being a bit of a swine and pulls hard at the collar - like a slip lead they release instantly.
