Barbecue lighter

The sun came out at about 10.30.

SWMBO decided that we would have a barbecue lunch.

OK. Charcoal, check. Barbecue ready for action, check. Firelighters - no. Methylated spirit - no. Matches- no. Aaahh! Deary me!

Then I remembered the electric hot gun weedkiller that I had bought a couple of years ago that has sat, mainly unused in the shed, because she "doesn't like it"

A forced draught, red hot element, possibility of igniting the charcoal all over and we now have lovely white coals and no smell of meths or fire lighters.

Steaks, here I come!

I make my own feather sticks for BBQ lighting, they're surprisingly effective.

All you need is kindling and a good knife - or even a small hatchet

Yes a good heavy knife and feather some dry wood, I use it in the Kelly Kettle, the barbeque and anywhere where you want a single match and it all goes up.

All wonderful suggestions, but missing the salient point that I didn't have any matches!

Yes, I make those to take fishing for fires.

AA battery and a chewing gum wrapper? Haha, that works.

A 9V square battery and wire wool is even better

Both good ideas, but require batteries and/or chewing gum or wire wool.

I used what was to hand (or rather, buried in the shed)

I bought a kitchen blow torch today. It runs off a butane gas canister. Primary purpose is to sear slow cooked meats and to cook freshly caught seafood on the beach/boat. Now wondering what else I can do with it 😀

Creme brulee or a bit of meringue

Thank you, but I was thinking of using it for things that it was not intended for, and no, I don't mean torture (not sure why that popped in to my head!).

I did think that you meant household uses but the gas doesnt always last long so theyre best kept to food or the odd emergency pipe solder.

Suppose you could try some small scale shou sugi ban.
