amateur
The sun came out at about 10.30. SWMBO decided that we would have a barbecue lunch. OK. Charcoal, check. Barbecue ready for action, check. Firelighters - no. Methylated spirit - no. Matches- no. Aaahh! Deary me! Then I remembered the electric hot gun weedkiller that I had bought a couple of years ago that has sat, mainly unused in the shed, because she "doesn't like it" A forced draught, red hot element, possibility of igniting the charcoal all over and we now have lovely white coals and no smell of meths or fire lighters. Steaks, here I come!
Pangolin
Lidl had charcoal starters in, theyre great, just need a bit of paper in the bottom. They were like £6. Edited May 30, 2021 by Pangolin

robbiep
I make my own feather sticks for BBQ lighting, they're surprisingly effective. All you need is kindling and a good knife - or even a small hatchet
DUNKS
Use what our neighbours do. Used diesel oil and an old wellington boot. What it smells like anyway.
amateur
All wonderful suggestions, but missing the salient point that I didn't have any matches!

Yes, I make those to take fishing for fires. 52 minutes ago, amateur said: All wonderful suggestions, but missing the salient point that I didn't have any matches! AA battery and a chewing gum wrapper? Haha, that works.

I used what was to hand (or rather, buried in the shed)

Vince Green
The standard firelighter when all else fails. Powder from a .22 round and a magnifying glass

enfieldspares
I keep the waxed paper wrappers off those sachets of instant porridge for these times. Great bonfire lighters and I'm sure they'd work too on barbecues.
Houseplant
I bought a kitchen blow torch today. It runs off a butane gas canister. Primary purpose is to sear slow cooked meats and to cook freshly caught seafood on the beach/boat. Now wondering what else I can do with it 😀

I did think that you meant household uses but the gas doesnt always last long so theyre best kept to food or the odd emergency pipe solder. Suppose you could try some small scale shou sugi ban.
