If you feel the inside about the same level as the bottom of the door, you will feel some flat ledges that the grate fits on.

The grate allows air under the fire and provides space as an ash pit.

That is true.

There should also be a little tool to open and close the door when it’s hot. However, you can just use a stick or similar item for that.
