Reloading manuals?

Recommended Posts

Currently researching all aspects of this side of the sport to hopefully start reloading soon, initially .38 Special / .357 Magnum, possibly .223 Rem at a later date. Which reloading manual would those with experience recommend, or is there perhaps better information available on-line? Is a hardcopy manual a must-have for a just couple of calibres?

lyman.

after reading lyman seek out specialised data and books for the exact calibre you will load.

I wouldn't say a manual is essential but one is very useful. The first manual I got was the Speer one as it came with my reloading kit.

It may depend on what reloading kit you have and what bullets and powders you plan to use. If you're using Lee kit then the Lee manual may be the best for you. (Although, Lee die sets have good instructions in them). I have since picked up a 2nd hand Sierra manual as I use Sierra bullets.

Worth noting that each manual will have a different set of reloading powders and in some cases the suggested charges will vary a fair bit. I also have a copy of the Lyman handbook and that's quite good to look through but has little Vihtavuori load data. (Like many powder manufactures there is Viht data online).

I'd try and have a flick through some books in your local shop or if you're a member of a club ask if anyone could lend you one.

If you are near Colwich parish you can borrow my Sierra edition 5 and my Lee modern edition 2?

Just pm me.

Thank you, very kind offer. I am only 30 mins away. I don't have any reloading gear yet, just doing the research, but thank you.

A manual is very useful to read up on techniques, but with so many powders now unavailable they aren’t much good. Most powder companies now put their data on the website, so you can look up the powder that’s available to you

You often get a different set of data in a reloading manual compared to the powder data. Different bullet makes, different barrel lengths, different cases & primers. Worth looking at both IMO.
