its either

  1. a tool for compressing circlips...prior to installing them
  2.  or a tool for undoing threaded inserts...you can see the different types of holes it will suit ...round...oblong..square...

something like the threaded plate that secures a firing pin on a shotgun......but bigger....

thats my thought !!!!

edit ....the rubber end bit ...does it turn a threaded rod ?

The rubber bit is just a cap, I'm intrigued now. It's adjustable and the hex headed bolts lock the sliding rings in place.

It's an old model, for removing the screwback cases of watches. Different shapes for different cases, and they slide for different sizes.

I have/had one and used it many times.

Here's a more modern one: https://www.onbuy.com/gb/adjustable-opener-watch-repair-tool-remover-back-case-wrench-cover-watchmakers~c11143~p25621520/?exta=cjunct&lid=58621109&stat=eyJpcCI6IjQuNDAwMCIsImRwIjoiMC4wMDAwIiwibGlkIjo1ODYyMTEwOSwicyI6IjEwMCIsInQiOjE2Mjc3MTIzMzUsImJtYyI6IjIuMCJ9&source=cjLeft+My+Tag&AID=13876643&CJEVENT=bd25e409f35411eb8138f6fc0a18050e

It is correct. Just been looking for the one I used to use many years ago, but must of thrown it out or lost it, after buying a modern one......also many years ago.

That seems a good shout but it seems a bit agricultural, it's seven inches long. Thinking along ditchmans lines could it be for removing primers from artillery shells etc as he liked a bit of militaria?

Hello, how big are the watches ????  🤔

The gap between the fittings is probably only 25mm and adjustable along the shaft. Also probably used for clocks/timepieces/scientific/measuring equipment with sealed backs, but larger diameters than watches 👨‍🔧🤷‍♂️

To be honest I wouldn't want that one near any of my watches, but it hasn't been looked after, just stuck in a toolbox [probably] in the man-cave 😉 Interesting item though 😊

Hello, it does look a bit heath Robinson, saying that when I started in Engineering we use to make all kinds of tools that had a particular purpose,

I thought it seems a bit too agricultural to have around watches but I must defer to your superior knowledge. Thanks for clearing that up.

Old watches were agricultural back when that was made

along with the fuses and timers on bombs and ordinance

you could probably unscrew that primer with it

Usually done at the factory with a phosphor bronze peg spanner.

I’m sure you’re correct

however on one of the episodes of foyals war there was a bomb disposal man using a similar tool

just putting a bit of excitement into this image it’s on the mantlepiece and the kids say grandad  what’s that

reply 1

it’s for taking the backs off watches boaring🤔

reply 2

it’s for defusing bombs but I don’t use it much anymore 😂

is probably the coolest answer 👍😃
