Covering rubber pads with leather

Too late now as it looks as though SS has it cracked. I used to cover rubber recoil pads for smoother mounting. I don't know/can't remember the correct terminology but if you really soak the fleshy underside of a piece of leather with superglue and let it dry the leather will harden so that you can snap it. Grab hold of the two snapped halves and you can peel the now hard fleshy bit from the outer skin giving a thin more workable material.
