Apart from family life such as your marriage , the birth of your children or the death from a family member , What three events will stay in your mind forever .

I was in the 1953 East coast floods but a bit to young to remember much of the finer details , the three things that spring to mind are .

The death and the funeral of Princess Diana .

The planes crashing into, and the collapse of the Twin Towers in New York

The Tsunami in Japan on Boxing day 2004 .

That is mine , what is yours ?        MM

Being let loose on the road, in my Anglia van shortly after passing my test

Seeing the seas that built in a bad gale on my first trip aboard a deep sea trawler as a teen

Understanding the true meaning of life,  again in my Anglia van accompanied by a friendly girl who's name escapes me..😀

Very similar in some respects , I bought a For Cortina while I was going for lessons and only dare taking it out in the dark and stayed up the marshes all day until it got dark , then I was all on edge until I got back home , lucky enough I passed first time and my L plates were never used .

Again we had the same memories about the seas , I was on a converted trawler that was used as a stand by boat for the oil rigs in the North Sea ( Offshore Marine Ltd ) , the first few trips were not to bad then one trip we were out in storm force winds and I honestly thought my time was up , the bridge at times were under water and the screws on the propeller were often well out of the water , in all my time at sea , with being in the R N , and taking fishing parties out this was the only time I was sick and scared , I vowed if I got back my sea faring days were over and true to my word I never went back.

As for your third one , sorry I can't comment as my car always smelt of dead birds and was full of shooting gear that no respectable girl would come anywhere near it , mind you , in those care free days we had very few girls who were respectable

A cashier at the grocery store I worked at.  I was 15, she was 21.

9/11, I was in class watching it live

The first time a kissed my wife.

I remember seeing the death of Diana on tv as a was staying at my grandmas.  I told my grandma and she instantly took over the TV.  Americans don’t really follow the Royal family but everyone loved Diana.  Kate is well liked, everyone hates Markel, but Diana was loved like a TV star.  To this day to find the Diana dinner plates at flea markets and thrift store.

9/11 definitely.

I was in my early twenties when Diana died. Just got home heavily jet lagged after flying back from New York. My mum woke me up to tell me the news. Apparently, I had a go at her for waking me up about something so trivial. She loves telling that story!

Quite right too!

9/11

The Good Friday Agreement

Once again feeling the heat of Africa after stepping off the plane in Namibia. I'm not sure I'll get back to the continent again, but if I don't, that memory will be treasured forever. A simple thing, but it'll never get forgotten.

Borrowing a mate's Kawazaki Z400, barely slowing over a crossroads where I should have stopped but instead stood up on the footpegs to check for crossing cars.  Normal cars aren't a problem to spot there, but the low-roofed sports car I couldn't see below the hedge, going very quickly indeed.........  I still can't believe I'm alive, it missed the back wheel by inches...

Another enjoyable evening on the Z400, this time I'd attracted a rather fine young filly who I'd taken out for the evening.   It was mid-summer, cereals approaching harvest, I pulled off the road and took the bike straight up a tramline into the field.  After I took the bike back, my mate called me back the next day in a bit of a grump, saying I had to to get back round there and clean it, including the seat 😛

I never did get round to actually getting a motorbike licence....

The first ever bird I shot.  It was my first year with a gun, after beating for a while on a farm shoot.  We were lined out on the edge of a wood, about to walk it through but the guy who did the keeping said for us to all face the other way across the field and he'd walk the back hedges in with his dog, to push any stragglers in to the wood before we knocked it through.  When he was about 150yds from us there were a few pheasants starting to break out, most curled around him but one cock bird made a beeline for the wood, coming on a line to me but then curling out to my left.  I was on the end of the line, nobody to my left so up went the gun and down came the bird.  Then I sent my dog in and she hunted it down and retrieved it to hand perfectly.  I can play it back in my mind almost like a video.

Theres quite a few.

9/11 happened when I was at school and didn't hear about it until we were on the bus going home. I can remember being on the 419 bus going past the old Maltings going out of town and thinking it was strange he had the radio on and being bored of the story being repeated so got my mini disc player out and put on some Nirvana. I was very nonplussed about it.

The moment I sorted it in my mind to get out of a hugely toxic relationship - I'd been hunting all day and got home at 9 and didn't sit down till 10 after I'd sorted the horses, and she turned up on my doorstep looking for a fight. I went team chasing the next day and have never ridden so recklessly in my entire life! It ended up with me getting asked to hunt a rather attractive ladies horse and she has since ended up as wife.

The birth of my little girl. It was a bit boring, the mid wife didn't like me, I ate the wife's sweets and got told off and finally after about 14 hours the little goblin decided to pop out. She was then unfortunately poorly and spent a week in hospital. I'll never forget getting in my car after id gone to pick them both up to find they'd been moved up to the special care baby unit, I held it together in the hospital for the wife and then got in the car and just sat and bawled my eyes out for 5 minutes. Ended up alright in the end but it was a rough week!

Being from Northern Ireland there's been quite a few events that stuck in my mind. But ill never forget lying on the sofa chilling out and all television cutting out and an urgent message coming up for any doctors and medical staff in the Omagh area to come help in the aftermath of the bombing.

The feeling of getting my firearms licence for the first time and becoming the proud owner of £150s worth of the USSRs finest baikal and taking it home to show my neighbour and mentor.

Quite a scary one I will never forget as a beater, was being hit in the face by a piece of shot from some idiot on his peg shooting at a driven pheasant with no sky behind it, likely no more than 10ft off the ground. heard the pattern zip around me, I would say if I was 20 yards closer I would have copped at least half the pattern, if the piece of shot hit a centimeter higher I would have been blinded in one eye at best.

Well done folks , keep them coming .

First encounters with girl friends seem a life lasting memory , I can easily remember mine as she is now making a cup of tea before we go out , we were in the same class at school and their is only a six weeks age difference between us , I left school at Christmas 1962 and my wife left at Easter the following year , 59 years later we are still together and my advice is , start off how you continue to carry on , well it worked for me :good:

The day President I heard President Kennedy had been shot.

The day Donald Campbell died trying to set a new water speed record- a hero of mine. The top of his gravestone is in the shape of Bluebird.

The Moon Landings.

All significant  teenage memories in the 1960s

My wife would kill me if she knew this picture was on the Internet.  My son was a 16 hour natural birth.  She had been awake for almost 48 hours at this point and her face was incredibly swollen because her blood pressure and the fluids they where pushing into her. She had no makeup and a messy pony tail but I still like the photo. But hands down the most amazing thing I every experienced.

Three things;

  1. For 9/11 I was on business at a UK Government site - and security went crazy, all visitors including me swiftly escorted from the site - and I didn't really find out why (other than a high level security alert) until the car radio updated me as I was driving back home.  I stopped the car in a layby to telephone the office.
  2. Slight cheat in that it is really two events, but taking my two Labradors to the vets to say final farewells.  Both after long and lovely lives, but still clearly remembered.
  3. A visit (c. 2006) to a commemorative exhibition for a relative of mine, where Prince Philip attended (in a private and personal capacity) to open the exhibition and he spent some time with me talking about the exhibition and my relative, who he had known.

I have plenty of memories that stand out in my mind , many happy , and some so sad that I still can't talk about them.

Several that stick in my mind are.

The wedding of Charles and Diana,  mainly because my best mates sister got hit by a car and died as they were getting married.  I walk past the spot where she died every morning ,and I still feel that sadness for a second or two.

The death of Diana.  I switched the TV on while I got ready for an early shift , and I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

9/11  . I stood and watched it through the window of a TV shop , with a group of strangers .  I didn't realise just how much that act of terrorism would change the world.

Tearing my cruciate ligament in a county Cup semifinal at the age of 15, watched by scouts from several professional teams. My team went on to win in the final but I never played at that level again.

Witnessing the immediate aftermath of my teenage sisters unsuccessful suicide attempt when I was 7 but not understanding what had happened.

Seeing the damage inflicted on the ancient woodland surrounding our farm after the storm of 87.

9/11. I was driving home from Ipswich when it was reported that a light plane had hit one of the towers. By the time i got home all hell broke loose and tv footage showed another had followed. Then shortly later they collapsed.

Princess Diana's death. I was asleep when it happened but had left tv on in bedroom (i was still living at home in my 20's) and woke for some reason. I was saddened because i had a lot of time for her.

Being told i had cancer. Yeah its a selfish event but when the doc told me i was completely deflated.

As a Small Lad 5 yr, I was In the Yard Playing with the Dog. A Green van "ford 100E"came in the yard at speed. An old man got out, "is your Dad around" With that my dad appeared, and he told Me to go into my Mum.

Th old chap was the bearer of sad news, My cousin !2 years older than me Had been Killed On That Shining triumph 500 . I remember that like it was yesterday.

Years Latter we had moved To Lincolnshire, And Near Epworth it was a Saturday Afternoon i was in the back garden and i heard a Huge bang and  my mom and dad came out looked around, would see nothing over the fields from where we were. but latter On the News the Nipro Plant at flixbourgh  Had blown up smashing windows miles away and causing death and distrction in the immediate area.

Third thing is Probably the 911 attack it was the same year my Daughter was born, and i can remember i was home that day tv was on and it came on Tv About 200Pm 230Pm IIRC.

I think these type of incidences are immortalised in peoples minds because they, like those who recall the killing of JFK, remember distinctly where they were when they heard the news
Apart from those special times regarding births and deaths of family members, I can’t discount one as it was the death of one of my kids, and being asked to make the decision to switch off his life support.
I recall the death of Diana as I’d been to a mates 50th the previous evening and when I put on the news the following morning, simply assumed the queen mother had died, as I  hadn’t heard a name but obviously it concerned a member of the royal family, until all became clear of course.
Massive massive shock.
I recall how eerily quiet the town was on the day of her funeral also.

And of course the attacks on the twin towers. I was painting in a house and heard Steve Wright say they were receiving reports of an awful accident concerning an aeroplane which had crashed into one of the towers. Within a few minutes he announced another had flown into the second tower. It was at this point it became obvious one could have been an accident, but two? Nah! I switched on the clients tv.
