steve_b_wales
My brother in law works in social care and has just received the bonus of £735 pre tax (Welsh government bonus) which is supposed to mean that he should get £500 after tax. His income before tax/insurance is taken out was £2338:00 and he received £1898 net. He thinks that he's paid too much tax and/or insurance. His tax code is C1272L Does anyone know if his net pay is correct?
JTaylor91
Seems correct according to this little calculator https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/tax-calculator/
Lloyd90
https://www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/salary.php Good little calculator this. £2,338 x 12 = £28,056 before any deduction. His actual take home will depend on his pension contributions, any union membership or similar. The above calculator says his take home should be £1,893. So basically looks pretty much bang on. HantsRob
Hi Whilst the link above does it for you, lets break it down further to explain. Annual income = 28,000 Tax code of C1272L means you can earn £12,720 tax free. On that amount, tax is 20% and NI is 13.8% I believe. Bonus is taxable and NI is payable also. The standard tax code this year is 1257, meaning he has extra allowances. Actually the C means he's in Wales, and the Welsh standard code is 1270, so I don't know why he's not extra, I assume maybe WFH allowance? the L means he's under 65 and without extra perks such as a company car. So, on 28k, take home is: non-taxable + (remainder of 28k with 20% VAT and 13.8% NI removed) = 12,720 + (15,280 - (15,280 x 0.2) - (15,280 x 0.138))= 12,720 + 15,280 - 3,056 - 2,108.64 = £22,835.36 Per month /12 = 1,902.95 The couple of quid difference is as he actually earns 28,056 but I rounded to the equal thousand. He very much is being paid fairly. Welcome to taxes. Enjoy paying tax on the things you buy also. Double tax.
