Any petrol engine techies on board Regarding VVT systems

A T30 X-trail petrol engine.
QR20DE engine throwing frequent p1110 codes. The VVT solenoid did not have filters over its oil entry slots so I replaced it - both the old and new solenoids actuate when power applied. I'm suspecting some debris might be lodged in what looks like integrated oil ways in the upper side cover.

I propose to next check the integrated oil ways in the VVT cover are clear but have no idea how oil transfers from the cover to the phase actuator... any help prior to removing it would be greatly  appreciated.

Alternatively if anyone has a scrapped engine perhaps they could remove the cover to investigate how oil gets from the cover to the phase adjuster please?

Can you not give it a blast of high pressure air

That's the plan if it occurs again now that I know the oil ways. Its behaving itself after I gave it a good kickdown thrashing through the gears in the hope some crud clears.

The curiosity in me wonders how those holes through the 'bulges' were made.
