This warm still weather is perfect for them, they can land on the perfect spot and you very rarely see or feel them till its to late.

Do you use any type of insect repellent?

I haven’t done but I thought I’d be ok in my workshop

With regards to the swelling, would it be possible to encourage them to bite in one particular area? Maybe loose shorts....just wondering.

That’s caused me enough trouble lately 😂

Late spring/early summer they were rampant around these parts but mercifully they seem to have not liked the cool/cloudy/damp weather we've experienced in my neck of the woods in the latter part of summer.

They always go for my shoulders for some reason.

By the way insect repellent does nothing against horse flies - it's designed for mosquitoes which don't like the ingredient called "Deet" whatever that is.....

Agree DEET does not work on horse fly but there is a repellent that contains Picaridin as the active ingredient and that as had some good reports for humans and horses...https://www.hedgewitchessentials.co.uk/icaridin-picaridin-insect-repellent-500ml.html

Increase your vitamin B, marmite on toast.

I got a bar of soap recommended to keep midges away,  it might help you, stinks a bit though.

So now I have to wash too 😫. It never ends 😂😂
