They could double the numbers of police over night, and they'd still be unlikely to be around at the point of an attack.

But there'd be more deternce as more crimes would be solved and criminals caught. Meaning offenders would also fear being caught. The vast majority of criminals don't commit crime expecting to be caught, if they thought they might, they wouldn't do it. Almost no criminals are caught red handed anymore.

n answer to your first question, the difference is that those involved in gang/drug culture are by and large involved in an illegal activity, whereby the carrying of knives and guns is common.

As for the second point, that depends what they’re armed with. It doesn’t have to be a knife, but it does have to be effective.

But you are suggesting people who perceived a threat should arm themselves, so we end up with the wild West.

Armed with... doesn't matter, still armed unless it is armed with a bad attitude.

...what do you suggest they do, given that at the point they need the Police, they won’t be there

I have already suggested that they should not have to, just like all members of society should not have to. In this case and many like it it is to do with sex and misogyny and treating those who are different with contempt. If you want to be radical about it sit down and talk with your young boys and be very frank about porn, treatment of other people as equals not as different.

Perhaps people should sit down with boys and girls and talk about drug taking, knife carrying , grooming etc. You seem obsessed with violence towards women, whilst almost totally ignoring violence against men.

I find it odd.

Do you really believe that rape and murder is simply about misogyny and being bought up without respect. While not nice, being disrespectful about the opposite sex is world's away from wanting to rape and murder them, you really do live in another world with your views on your fellow human beings.

Still no chance of an answer to my original question then!

There would be more deterrent yes, but these odd balls who are happy to assault women would likely still do it, the only likely deterrent would be knowing the death penalty waited if they were caught and proved guilty.

That's why in the first case women need to look after themselves.

Yep, spot on particularly the last sentence, unfortunately.

Cressida **** has to go, but like all politicians (that's what she is), she won't go unless pushed, with a nice golden handshake and another cushty job offer.

The Wild West is a silly comparison really Henry, but if you want to pursue that point, at least people in the Wild West had the chance to protect themselves, todays women have no choice at all, by law. Howe can that be right?

Women 'shouldn't have to' do what Henry? Arm themselves? Feel vulnerable when out alone at night? I quite agree, but they do feel vulnerable when out at night alone. So what do you suggest they do Henry? What should the young student teacher who was murdered just the other week have done? What should all those women who have broken up with violent partners who then report he is stalking her and threatening her do, who despite reassurances from the police, end up murdered?

What do you suggest women do when they fear for their safety alone at night Henry, out there walking home, and those police she desperately needs are no where to be found?

Men are much more likely to kill than women by a factor of 9:1. However men are much more likely to be the victim of murder than women by a factor of 2:1. Something like 10% of female murder victims have been killed by a stranger, whereas for men it is 30%. So by my estimations men are 6 times more likely to be killed by a strange man than a woman is.

The incidence of murder by stranger in the UK is very low. The fear and hysteria created by the media in these lone, white, female cases causes us to massively over estimate the risk. We also consider women to be lamb-like. This propagates the defencelessness of women by instilling a passive mentality. My wife was saying that it is unfair that because of our society I am confident to go anywhere alone at any time, or get into any confrontation without being concerned of my safety - whilst she would be terrified. I explained that my lack of anxiety over my safety stems from years of confrontation. You can’t be afraid to get into a fight just because you will lose. If I had daughters I would want them to have a similar level of assertiveness. My mother was one of thirteen and my aunts were forces to be reckoned with, as I’ve stated previously they once hospitalised a man.

I do not support people being armed for self protection but I do advocate for men and women to have the confidence to stand up for themselves.

To clarify the Sarah Everard situation using police deception is not applicable to the above, which is why the whole-life tariff was correct. Also, I do not blame victims for not defending themselves. I am merely stating we need to get out of the victim mentality.

People posting about street fights many years ago, broken noses, cheek bones, receiving a good kicking and worst case was a glass or bottle in your face are miles away from todays tools being used. Its memory's from yesteryear, that's history, gone and unfortunately wont be back.

The books closed on the 70/80's we're now in the 20's knife crime together with gun crime is rife in the country, there is no control on what gang style criminals are entering the country adding to what we already have.

Tosh, I've mentioned young men I've mentored who have been in the justice system for violence and knife use in school along with misogyny, sexual violence against women but I understand that you can't read every post, but please carry on and just make an assumption rather than ask a question

So what do you suggest they do Henry?

Why are you forcing me down a dead end, it's men that are killing women, why can't you understand that?

Talk to your boys about not leering at women, not objectifying women, not using porn sites as sexual education, treating everyone as an equal, teach them to either confront these misogynistic ideologies or report them. It's not rocket science!

Okay henry, if it's as binary as that, it's asain grooming gangs, raping and assaulting girls, should they be focused on in the same way.

Again, I won't hold my breath for an answer!

henry d - you post rubbish without any regard to its content. I used to think you had decent opinions, but sadly you appear to post silly post after silly post. I have read them all and despair that you may never post a worthwhile contribution again.

PS - I note that you don't claim to have resolved grooming? Given your impressive list of achievements, I am surprised it is missing.
