Whatever happened to useful free tins

Some cigarettes (I particularly remember an uncle having very thin tins of Benson and Hedges cigarettes which I think were airline supplied and marked BOAC and my father having "Three Castles" cigarettes in tins) and cigars were also in tins/tubes as well as tobacco, various mints, sweets and throat pastilles, X hooks, tacks, even 'gramophone needles'.  We used to have lots as both father and one grandfather smoked pipes and got tobacco in tins.
