English Short Haired Pointer?

German short haired pointer 😉

thanks everyone, I have no doubt that their will be ups and downs and probably lots of going round in circles but I can’t wait. I’m looking forward to the challenge.

What a beauty, wish you all the best with the little lady.

If you haven't read it before "The roughshooters dog" by Michael Brander is a great read regarding the German pointers.

Thanks rob I shall track a copy down and get it ordered 👍🏻

They're supposed to be one of the easier HPR’s to train :)

Looking forward to hear how you get on.

To be honest Lloyd the thought of ease hasn’t crossed my mind quite the opposite in fact, I have no illusions that training a gun dog will be easy. I’ll be seeking the help and advice of friends that train gun dogs and also from breed specific trainers/professionals as the last thing I would want to do is ruin her.

I shall also do my best to keep this thread updated with progress when the training starts. For the time being she will enjoy being a pup and building bonds with the family.

Spr1985   I have owned a GSP and a bunch of viszlas. First and foremost is basic obedience from day one, like any dog and after that they will tell you how to hunt. If you have built that partnership during that obedience traing then all will be well.  Whistle commands are essential as they will work long distances away from you.  It is rare for them to tell you lies, if they point then you can bet something is there.  DO NOT give them toys and be very gentle with retrieves as they can become hard mouthed. Make them understand that whatver they have in their mouths is not theirs it is yours.  I took my GSP on at 10 months as a rescue dog and he didn't know his name and he was scared stiff of women. With firm but gentle coaxing he could be found curled up on my wifes lap after about three months.  He was a pure hunting machine but unfortunately the greedy breeder had bred to long and too old on both bitch and dog (father/mother) father in double figures and mother 9years old after numerous litters and we lost Mole at 6yrs of age in his prime due to an epileptic fit as a result.

How is she settling in?

Hi harrycatcat1, fantastically well to be honest. Getting on famously with my other dog (a lazy Frenchbulldog that likes to sleep and pass wind all day) which is brilliant. She’s great with my wife and children. She’s m aking excellent progress with going outside to toilet, only goes on the pad if she doesn’t make it to the door quick enough (or I fail to notice the tell tale signs) she’s hugely food orientated and I have her sitting on command 8 times out of ten, seems to understand down (when she jumps up) and will give paw when asked and there is a treat involved. So all in all for just over 9 weeks old I’m very impressed with how well she has settled and how well she’s picking things up 😁

Fantastic, thank for the update 👍 I think that she will settle in better with another dog there. I had a gsp 40 odd years ago and was a nightmare at night time, whining and howling. I had to have it at the side of my bed for a period as it was waking the kids up.

Saying that it didn't take a deal of training it seemed to come ready trained as a pup. It would fetch wood pigeon back to the hide all day long and was fantastic to take partridge shooting. It was also a very good dog to protect the house.

I think you are completely correct with the other dog helping with the settling in, I don’t hear a peep out of either of them throughout the night.
I’m being very careful with the fuss and snuggles, making sure it’s on my terms and not hers as Ive read they’re “Velcro dogs” and suffer separation anxiety very easily. So I decided that she needs to learn from an early age that me not being in view/ picking her up every five mins is not a bad thing and I will always be back. eg: if I sit down in the kitchen and she jumps up I put her down and say down and wait for the interest in jumping up to subside and then pick her up when I’m ready.

she gets her second vaccinations tomorrow so it won’t be long before I can take her out to explore a bit further than the garden and hopefully do some basic lead work. She seems to pick things up very quickly  so I intend on getting a good foundation of basics in place before starting any sort of gundog training. I’m looking at around the 6 month mark but that will depend on progress and should I need to I’ll bring that date forward or move it out further.

on a separate note, I’m on peg on the 1st of January and will therefore be returning home with game in feather. would the forums knowledge base advise letting her around the game when I bring it home at this young age or keep them separate?

Don't let her mouth it for certain but just seeing and smelling it will not be a problem.    Interesting to lay it on the lawn and see if she points. That is how I chose my first viszla all the others where milling about and he was pointing a moorhen in some rushes at 8 weeks..  It was a good choice

Thanks for the advice walker 👍🏻.
I know she points French bulldogs, if you zoom in you can see the paw up and she’s fixated (I was just taking pictures of them playing and clocked it, I called her and she came to me as I didn’t want the chase/retrieve instinct to kick in …..
