Old English side by side. 12 bore game gun

Recommended Posts

I have had this gun since 1983. I bought it from the gunsmith on Wonford Hill, Heavitree, Exeter. I doubt it is still there now!  Tony White ( http://www.trwhiteguns.co.uk/ )

serviced it and regulated the chokes for me (imp and 1/4) it has been used mostly with Eley Impax, Eley Grand Prix, Grand Prix HV or Maximum. Those have been the mainstay of my shooting. I am having to change my shooting due to a big crash on the motorway on my motorbike - chap on his mobile phone put paid to normal life. It has taken 4 years but I am back on my feet now, but I can't shoot much because my shoulder is still up the creek, even using the air rifle hurts. It weighs 6lb 6ozs, so would make a nice gun for a lady.  Standard game layput, 28 inch nitro proofed barrels, choked imp and 1/4 which pattern nicely. One of my loves was woodcock shooting and I used to go to see Mark Piper on Islay where I have shot THREE right and lefts with this gun. Snipe on the Pembrokeshire marshes were another. I have always preferred wild bird shooting. With Maximum 4s even geese have featured in my forays, on the decoys on stubbles overlooking Loch Leven. It is quite versatile. I realise it is not a modern gun, I have never found non-ejector to be a problem. In fact it saves me having to search for empties afterwards!

Features are the cross lock action, which is tight. The highly embellished action, trigger gaurd, top plate and look at the cheeks. tear drop stock is more akin to high end guns. Gold oval in the stock, which has a slight cast to it. Light, fast handling, crisp trigger pulls, again set by Tony White. Note how all the screw heads face fore and aft, more attention to detail to ensure the threads line up.

I am happy for anyone interested to come and have a go with it on a walk round.  It should be used by someone who will enjoy it, rather than languish in a cabinet. I would like £350 for it and think that is a sensible price.

There is still a gunshop at Heavytree Exeter ,not sure of ownership now though ,nice gun good luck with the sale.

If it is the same one, on the right at the bottom of the slope heading out of town. Just before the nurses quarters! It was in a row of terraced shops. I haven't been on that road for about 30 years though.

No idea!   I don't even know how you measure for it. Something I have never done - i just picked it up in the shop, it felt right, I bought it and have had it ever since. Shot over 1000 woodcock with it!

Yes 67.5mm cartridges are safe for it, 2.5 inches

I wish I had ground with that sort of woodcock numbers 😍

Islay is incredible. A fishing skipper friend of mine alerted me to it in the 80s. He was up there trawling and one night after a storm he said the woodcock were lying on the water like spent mayflies on a lake.... it was horrific to see the numbers that had perished. BUT it made me enquire as I already had shooting on Skye where the woodcock were thick with migrants.

I shot 2x right and lefts and 12 singles on one day on Islay.... witnessed.

If you want the best woodcock shooting I have ever encountered or heard of, get in touch with Mark Piper at The Gearach.

I have had it to the gunshop in Ipstones - the trigger length of pull is 14 1/2", if that helps.

The asking price is always negotiable, obviously.
