Back in the day there was a company called Screwit. Electricians of a certain age will remember this fondly. They made a twist on connector made of porcelain that was used to join two cables together, the fore runner of connector strip, now  copied/plagiarised by the Americans. This was available in two sizes 

Midget.   Which was the smaller version

Normal.  The larger version

 

wouldn't happen nowadays
