I haven't taken my rifles and shotguns out for a good few months, and yesterday my wife was moving stuff around where i keep my cabinets and noticed a leak from a pipe that is by two of the cabinets, it has been seeping for some time judging by the mould that was forming.

So first thing first, replace leaking pipe, then dehumidifier on and mould cleaned up, chemical treatment on it all so it's gone, then opened the rifle cabinet to check them, all fine no problems at all, then i opened the shotgun cabinet and oh dear oh dear, this cabinet is lower to the ground than the other and the mould was right by it.

Luckily the mould was only on the stocks, all metal work was ok balistol does it job very well, a rub down and all was well thank goodness.

This is the stock from my old Belgian sxs.

Oh dear 😳.

I had a damp gun issue a few years ago . I'd been shooting in torrential rain for most of the day . I rushed home as I had to get to work , and threw my gun in the cabinet , thinking that I'd dry it when I got home  from work  . I completely forgot about it when I got home from work , and then didn't have the opportunity to go shooting for weeks . When I next opened the cabinet , all of my guns were covered in blue mould , and the wet gun was brown with rust ☹.

It sounds like you had a lucky escape,  and things could have got much worse if you hadn't spotted the leak 👍.

It was the main in pipe for the house, a rubber seal had gone allowing water to trickle in, as you say lucky the wife spotted it, strangely for a week or so i have been saying "what's that smell", but i couldn't pin point it, obviously it was the damp concrete.

I use balistol on all the metal work on the guns, very good at keeping damp out.

Why does it stop rubber seals from splitting?
