One of my closest friends is Ukrainian and he tells me that Telegram and Discord are the two apps he uses to stay in touch with relatives there.  Telegram in particular is typically up and going because President Zelenskyy uses it to send messages to the country.  I wish you the best of luck in getting through to your friend.  Best regards.

I have the app on an apple device. Not really used it much though. What is it that you want to know?

Hello, how safe is it to use if I can down load to my tablet ? There's a Ukraine missing person list in Kharkiv called Nadiia - Bot , I was hoping to put something on to hope find my friend, there was a report on BBC news 7 days ago of a group of Ukrainian ladies listing missing persons on the Telegram app,

I’ve never had any issues with it, it’s advertised as being secure and protected. It’s been installed on my phone for years and never caused me any issues.

Definitely worth a try.  I would say if you have concerns about security just put as little personal info as possible into the app and don’t allow it free reign over your device/restrict what the apll on itself can access in settings

I use it as we have a ‘bot’ running to alert us of open flights that we can bid for.

Seems fine for that, but that’s all I use it for.

You'll have to excuse my ignorance on this . Do pilots have to sort of hold their hand up to accept a flight ?.

There is a group of us no longer based in the UK, which costs us money in accommodation.
So we keep an eye on the ‘app’ when on Standby duties. We then try and call our Crewing department to ask to go on a nightstop flight, ahead of others on Standby- were a tight lot you see 🙂

But when it’s costing almost a grand a month to be/get to work, savings have to be made somewhere.

At the same time, in our last day of Standby duties when you wish to get home that day, we use the ‘app’ to see what’s the chances of being called out…..

Thankyou very much sir 👍.

I know this will sound stupid , but I'd just never thought about how things might work for a pilot . I just sort of imagined that you drove to work , then flew to benidorm and back , then drove home 😄. A bit like a bus driver , but with a bigger bus , with wings , and drunk passengers 😁.

God, I wish.

Those ‘easy’ days of carrying out ‘Day Flights’ are long since gone for me.

Seem to live permanently out of a suitcase and from hotel to hotel.

I've never been keen on working away from home . I could tolerate the odd night , but that was enough for me . I'd have a hire car and drive hundreds of miles to get back to my Mrs and kids  . Some of the guys that I used to work with , absolutely loved working away from home ( they mainly loved the free bar 😁), some of them would even jump at the chance of three months working in America,  or Japan . One of the older guys would go to Japan as much as he could , because he loved their , unusual golf courses , unusual fishing , and karaoke bars 😄.

They used to have tall indoor pools ( think massive beer barrels) , that were filled with carp . You stand around the pool with a tiny fishing rod ( think ice fishing), and the bottom of the pool is raised , so that theirs loads of fish , in not a lot of water . I think It's more like hook a duck than real fishing . The matches my mate fished were in his lunch break .

He said that the golf courses were tiny , but I can't honestly remember what he found interesting about them .

He was also a massive fan of karaoke bars , and he was an even bigger fan of free booze 😄.

The company that I worked for , didn't pay you for time away from home , but while you were away , you could pretty much make your own entertainment and the company were happy to pay.

Some of the guys would just lock themselves in the hotel room , with the mini bar and porn channels.  Others would pick up women , and wine and dine them on the company account , others would take their wife/ girlfriend with them.

One incident that sticks in my head ,was when one of the guys ran up a tab of over 3.5k in a month . He was called in to see the manager to explain the bill . It turned out that he'd picked up two women on his first night in Liverpool,  and would take them back to his hotel room after work , and talk about the weather 😁, most of the 3.5k had been spent on steak dinners , and gin and orange 😄. The manager just told him to try and take it easy next month.

Their was only one rule set by the company , don't embarrass us !.  If you were late to the customer , don't bother going because you're sacked,  if you were going to be lazy , you're sacked , uncooperative with a customer , you're sacked.

I've never set foot on a plane , and didn't even consider that some pilots fly to the other side of the earth , and wouldn't be home in time for tea 😁.
