Magpies still come under the law regarding the destruction of, if I am not mistaken and yes they can and do a huge amount of damage to songbird populations although the experts will say differently. The only predator which keeps magpies in check is human.   About 5 yrs ago I had the job of reducing a huige influx of maggies to a farm and shot three hundred in two years. There are still a few about today but in balance.  You can imaging the damage those 300 did on that area to song bird populations.
