Little while ago my British Gas DD went from £41 per month to £109 and im warned its going up again in October AND January.

The big problem for me is i suffered several strokes in 2019 and am on a lot of medication to thin my blood etc which in turn means i struggle to get warm so looks like im gonna be cold!

I don't think you are going to be the only one, when reality of the energy crisis sets in, in mid winter when we can't get enough gas for electricity generation, a lot of people are going to be unhappy and cold.....

Merino thermals and Down jackets, etc, get them whilst available and relatively "inexpensive" as come the panic, the shops won't have any to buy

Gotta be honest I agree with Grant.

I think price rises will continue consistently into the future.

There’s always this talk of benefit scrounges who live it up and waste their free money, then when times get hard it’s all talk of pensioners who solely live off their national pension etc not being able to afford heating.

Hasn’t the government for years talked about people needing to save for their retirement etc and have private pensions or savings etc?

This forum, on many, many, many occasions has moaned about people (benefit recipients) who blow all their money on fags and booze etc, foreign holidays, and don’t save any money for retirement or take responsibility for their own situation.

But now that those chickens are coming home to roost people are moaning that it’s the Governments fault? 🤔🤷‍♂️ And “so many people are going to die due to this” …

The people who consistently waste their benefits, as well as the people (workers) who bury their head in the sand and make no arrangements for how they will live when they are old and can’t work anymore don’t seem to change their habits regardless … so the outcomes are either they learn the hard way, and they will have a miserable time or die sooner than they would have, if they had made suitable arrangements, or people take things more seriously 🤷‍♂️

Yes and I remember a certain "socialist" government saying this not long after they had made a massive raid on private pension funds:mad:

the Old  age Pension scheme is not a Benefit ! it has been paid in by people working, at a rate of 15%  and their employers at a rate of 13.25% , NOT the government they have not paid a penny piece into the NI Pension fund , in fact they have stolen this fund and are doling it out as if it came from their back pocket ,

I worked 54 years ,the last 4years I was exempt from paying NI contributions but my employer still had £96 per week , Also what should betaken into account is all the working people that will have died before drawing any of their pension or those that have died shortly after finishing work !

So before you and the government class the old age pension as a benefit ,its has been Earned by all the people that have paid into the NI old age pension fund ,that could also be you Loyd !

Thats because when times get hard, they are first in line for extra 'free money' and in this I dont include pensioners , as the vast majority have paid into the system in taxes and company pension pots , the fact the government squandered the money on other things isnt their fault.
I have several family members who do very very well out of a life on benefits, I do a 50 hour week, and they live better than me , all it takes is 5 kids each, a couple with 'pretend disabilities' and its Florida every year, with a couple more foreign holidays at least , a free car and rent paid 4 bed house in a nice area.

Those who slog away in 'gainful' employment sometimes look in the mirror and see a mug.
A mug who is already throttling back the gas and electric , trying to accrue some credit for the coming winter.

What you seem to miss and what the government always misses is that there's a big hole in the system.

Pensioners generally don't qualify for any of the help dished up to benefit claimants unless they receive pension credit. Then they automatically get tons of extras like free eye care, free dentist, free hearing aids, housing benefit, grants for insulation and boilers etc. and of course now they'll get the extra £650 as well. None of this is available to pensioners who've taken care of their finances.

Now though, many pensioners who've previously been getting along comfortably without dipping into savings are now finding that they're already worse off by £1,000 pa and after October they'll be worse off by at least £2,000 pa and probably nearer £4,000 pa by the end of 2023. And all that comes with none of the perks, extras and top up cash that the benefit recipients will get. There's talk of a a 10% rise in state pensions which offset some of it, but the self sufficient pensioners are still staring at a big drop in living standards.

Simply put, just because someone isn't on benefits it doesn't necessarily mean they're well off, and just because someone is on benefits it doesn't necessarily mean they're  poor. The benefits system is easy to abuse and, as I've said before, I can't think of anyone on benefits I've known or know who isn't abusing the system in one sense or another - and that includes several little old ladies who are otherwise as honest as the day is long. Fiddling the benefits system, either by hiding savings or working for cash or under the radar is standard practice in this part of the world.

And to make matters worse they keep on pushing back the years for state pension, this years they have added another 12 moths on mine, how can you plan to retire when they keep doing that. Im now being forced to work another 12 months before i retire, but i suppose i could always retire early and claim a load of benefits........................... BUT oh no i cant claim a penny because i have savings !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And this is the root of all of the unfairness in the system;

  • Save and you get no help with anything - and anything significant left if you do die may be subject to 40% tax
  • Spend up, waste it all  - and you will be fully supported by those who are still paying taxes and have savings

It is what the 'welfare state' has become - a complete disincentive to be careful and try to look after yourself and your family.

it seems that a fake disability is the way to go! bad back seems to be best , or fibromyalgia seems to be the new kid on the block , also the disability does not end when you retire, I know two  blokes that have 4x4 on mobility and one rides a Big bike, they ought to still give em those blue plastic one seaters ,good luck ,I wish I had a bit more gorm before I retired !

Can someone explain why the energy support payment is going to all households with an energy supplier account.

A lot of those who receive the £400 will still be on a fixed tariff (some for up to 2 years) and therefore not exposed to the price cap increase.

Why does the government not leave the price cap as it is and pay the energy suppliers a sum which they have to use to offset the costs they supposedly are seeing.

I'm sorry if you're struggling.

But those figures are meaningless without some context.

Those figures are what I’m paid in benefits each month. So average month to pay mortgage and all bills I get £300 a month to cover everything. As I own my home (mortgage) I don’t qualify for housing benefit so the £300 has to pay everything.
