Web-Tac box-fed semi-auto shotgun?

Recommended Posts

The Web-Tac is an excellent shotgun and serves as a very useful tool in my toolkit (albeit unsuitable for birds in the UK). It's not just for IPSC, imho.

Any mention of less "traditional" shotguns can sometimes invoke strong and even emotive reactions, so please, play nicely, I'm sure we can agree to disagree.

Below I present an objective analysis (review) of the Web-Tac, would you consider it, or nah? And why?

I would consider getting one for Practical Shotgun shooting on our range. I have an Escort Magnum 8 shot which I use for crop protection (this is listed on my FAC) and it's excellent. I only fire 4 shots at any one time though.

@steve_b_wales Nice! I have a regular Hatsan Escort, might even be my favourite shotgun I ever owned, reliable and economical enough to use as a beater whenever and wherever. The Web-Tac is probably more practical, less unwieldy (and more socially-acceptable) with its 5 round mag inserted, admittedly.

@davewh100 That's depressing news, I feel like the whole shooting industry is under pressure right now, and not just in the UK either. There are some very influential people who want to phase out hunting and shooting in general.

totally agree its getting silly turned my mate down for fac shotgun

Yes. But it'd be better for its INTENDED real world use with a shorter barrel and a magazine that wasn't so long. It's too "unhandy" and how would you fire it from the prone position? As for use on birds, pheasants, pigeons, and etc. there's a reason that the side-by-side (and over and under) have remained dominant.

Simply this Web-Tac and earlier similar things aren't fast enough on quarry such as pheasants and pigeon and too heavy for walking up game. Had they been so (the Edwardians in the 1900s were mad keen on new technology...Churchill remember owned and used a Mauser C96 and Colt 1911 self-loading pistol) they'd have adopted such for shooting.

That they didn't wasn't snobbery nor "fashion" it was simply that it didn't even do the job as good as (let alone actually better) than what they had. Browning limited the capacity of his groundbreaking Auto-5 shotgun because he realised that any more than five shells in a SPORTING shotgun is too heavy.

I've owned pre the Tory 1988 ban both a 20" barrel Winchester '97 and a 20" barrel Winchester 1912. The "new thing" in the 1980s was the South African "Stryker" drum magazine shotgun. Again for its INTENDED purpose it may have had merit. But as a sporting shotgun none.

Not as far as I know. A few member's of our club have applied for them to shoot Practical, and it's been granted. They also have a variation to purchase slugs.

My FAC shotgun is for crop protection(birds) only which is a condition on my FAC. I'm happy with that as I've got a few other shotguns I can use for anything else.

if hes an active member of a club and of UKPSA. unless hes in some kind of probation period with a club or their is more to the decline. he should be challenging it. he has a valid reason/need for one. its as valid a reason to own a section 1 smoothbore and slug ammunition as any their is.
