They might have happy to cave in with a promise of good behaviour from now on, but Lineker has refused. He has forced them to be braver than they thought possible. He has forced their hand and he has to go. This /\. It is reported he has been asked to come to agreement about what he says publicly including on means other than the BBC. This is the same as applies to other 'high profile' BBC personalities. He is simply being asked to behave in a way that fits the impartiality of the BBC charter. It is not unreasonable for an employer to expect people working for them to have to follow their rules. It is his choice; He can choose to continue to publicly express his personal views - in which case - he will not meet the BBC's rules and will need to leave the BBC. He can accept that he needs to keep his personal views to himself - in which case it seems the BBC will retain his services.

Will all these presenters join up and create their own sports TV channel ?! 🤔🤭🤣 Those pundits are playing a very dangerous game. They are at best replaceable, nobody would miss them, I for one would be glad to be rid of some of them. The world of TV is littered with victims of their own ego who overplayed their hand thinking they were untouchable.

Flashman
This affair flags in so many issues that it’s hard to see the wood for the trees. My main issue is the lazy comparison to the holocaust. I’d clip his lugs for that alone. That the BBC always offer balance and avoids appearing politically biased is well known. Too much licence fee money is thrown away on salaries for sports pundits, especially footballers. We can’t afford it and most don’t want it. Whilst they didn’t pick the time or issue, this is a golden opportunity to introduce some radical changes to sports coverage. Sack off the football pundits who strike and start again with a fresh, younger crop. New t&cs, lower wage bill, no real change to the coverage. There’s plenty of ex-footballers who’d be happy for the gig. Sky cleared out a load for various reasons and frankly, who can tell the difference? If he was an employee, if he were a journalist then yes I could understand it. He is not denied an opinion and nor are any other employees or contractors - but whilst he is still 'working' for the BBC - even if as a contractor, he is still seen by the public as a "BBC presenter" - so he must rightly follow the BBC guidelines - which do not allow him to express publicly any opinions that might impinge on the BBC's public role as an impartial broadcaster. If he leaves the BBC (which hew is free to do) he can talk about any of his own opinions. That is a decision for him since the BBC has (apparently) said that he can stay on if he follows their guidelines. Any business with a decent management will ensure that any person who comes in (even as a contractor) in support of the business upholds the business's guidelines in respect of the role he is fulfilling. His role is as a public facing presenter of a programme on behalf of the BBC. In effect - a public face of the BBC as a corporation, which has a charter that includes impartiality. It isn't the current government or the BBC chairman, DG or management who specify that - it is in the charter and the management have to operate within that. In such a public facing role he MUST ensure that the terms of the BBC's charter are met (by following the guidelines laid down by the DG and management) - because the BBC management have a duty to ensure that they comply with the BBC's charter.
