Hello there fellas,

I'm not an avid poster as many of you will notice, but i am an avid reader of the forums, they are extremely interesting, and probably feel like i know you lot alot more than you know me!

I've had my SGC for around 8mnths now, and am an avid clay shooter, and am planning in the very near future to start the search on finding my own permission.

Now a little recently i have fell in love with a few defenders that are for sale local to me in bolton, and have a few questions to ask, and i figured it best that i draw on the wealth of experience that is present on pigeonwatch.

The Defender in question is a 90 Tdi with 83k on the clock on an R plate. has regular service history etc etc

My queries are as follows:

What is Consumption like, i would be doing about 15k a year in it.

What are they like to maintain expense wise, tyres brake pads and discs, services, etc etc.

What should i be looking out for?

and whats likely to go wrong with it?

Your help will be much appreciated,

thanks a lot fellas,

Ashcmt

Good seeing you at Worsley at the weekend

You're after the right sort of Defender (Tdi) - I want one as well :bye2:

There's a guy I shoot with sometimes at Worsley called Lloyd. He's got one and knows a lot about them too. He shoots on Saturdays sometimes, you ought to have a word in his earhole

I own a 200tdi 90 , a mitsu paj 2.5 , a gaylord 4x4 , a4x4 transit . an escort and a pug 306 .

Cheapest to run pug . most expensive to run mitsu .

Most fun to drive the 90 by far !

Machine off road having to be mended the most .... It's the 90 <but you want to see where i knock it out at it lives again .

Machine i drive to work most .... the paj .

Machine i'd like to drive to work most , the 90 (reason i don't drive it to work is it's "hanging" inside , can't do that for work anymore )

BUY THE TDI IT'LL MAKE YOU SMILE !

all the best yis yp

I have done a fair few miles in 90s and mainly 110,s

I can say i have never had one break so badly it wont drive, i have rolled them, grounded them, flooded them and they have always struggled on.

I can say that if they are off roaded a lot the check the disks and hubs as the lads who repair ours say they can tell if they have been off roaded as they are groved and ground away.

brilliant bits of kit and if you dent a pannel then you can just lump hammer it out!!!

but i would say not brilliant for commuting to slough on a wet morning as the window screen wipers never seem to wipe fast enough (you all know what i mean!!) and the noise is horrible above about 50 and the body roll is fantastic if you take a roundabout a bit to fast!! (trust me i have driven to germany in one!!)

So in summary brilliant i have driven them more off road that on..grat bits of equipment..... whats the price if you dont mind me asking?

I know off road tyres can be expensive but spares are availabe everywhere and are not to bad on price

I know doors can take a hammering.. check for rust and on the sills and chasis as mud sits on the corners and underneath and tends to rot them

You will either love it or hate it. Don't pay more than 5K for a '98 and you will get @30mpg if your a sensible driver. Parts are easier to get than a dose and I still regret selling my 200 to YP as the TD5 although smooth and economical isn't as much fun as the 200  You will be very unlucky to find any rot but don't let that stop you checking the chassis, bottom of the doors or any other steel parts.

Remember if it isn't leaking oil it has probably run out of it

PS to that, check the outriggers they usually fill up solid when offroaded and rot out quite quickly, take a screwdriver or knife and have a good dig out, see how many different layers of soil and sand come out

Not an expensive job to put right but it is a reliable indication of the type of driving its done.

Tranmission can be abused if offroaded and IS expensive, make sure it changes sweetly and there is no horrible syncro crunching or whining in the transfer box in 4WD.

As you can guess I love them and have had restored Series 1 through to present Def 300TDI.

Why don't you think about getting one and then using veg oil (like wild gormets if you saw it??). There is lots of great advice around to cover it and how you should do it, oil filter changes, % in cold or warm weather.

Will be getting a lot better mpg then mate!!

I use a Pajero...but only cause I couldn't afford a LR of the same age! I passed my test in one and drove them (lots) in the Army. The current Army LR (Wolf) has shunned the newer TD5 for the 300TDI engine due to it's longevity and simplicity. I would say get one. The main things to look for are rotten chassis and bulkheads. Parts are cheap, labours not!

Deposit placed on an M plate 300 Tdi County Van in good nick, needs a little tlc for 4.5k

i think i've done good for that money to be honest, very very good fella up near smithhills hall in bolton with loads of them.
