There's nothing wrong with the Nikko Sterling make. Are you buying it new or second hand? What calibre rifle do you intend using it on? Another good make is the Hawke range, which offer a lifetime warranty and a fantastic aftersales service.

I bought a cheap 3-9x40 Gameking for £30 with the intention of changing it at a later date. Put it on my 22lr and its been on there 7 years, clear as a bell and not lost zero once. They were good scopes.

I've a gameking 4-16 on my fx, the reticle is a bit big on the mildot, but the glass is crystal clear. I paid £60 secondhand

In over 60 years I have only had two scopes which let me down. 
One was a Nikko Sterling 6x40 which would not hold zero on a .22 Hornet.

My favourite scope of all time (but not with IR), dont seem to come up for sale very often. I'm kinda thinking you may need reach back mounts on a Mercury.

Realistically whether you want to hear it or not, a 3-9x40 or a 4-12x40 would be plenty for a mercury. Me personally I'd put a 4x40 or 4x32.

Ultimately I will be upgrading to a Weihrauch KT100 if that makes a difference?

And me. More than enough.

I had a hw100 and ultimately I actually had my gameking on it before I sold it. Different league of accuracy and still a bit of overkill, but handy with 177 and my **** eyes. 

I'd probably go 4-12x44
