My late mother's carer drove for the six years that we knew her on her Hungarian driving Licence and seemed to get away with it. Apparently because she used to return to Hungary a couple of times a year to visit family it was legal.
ditchman
i was driving to Hainford hall scrap yard...with my stepson and a trailer full of scrap....we were driving on the back road and out of the corner of my eye i saw some movement...it was a wheel overtaking the car ....we both looked at it...and never said a thing as it overtook the car and wenton down the road until it hit the edge of the road and dissapeared into a field....we slowed down and heard a grating behind us ...and i glanced into the mirror and saw sparks coming from the right side of the trailer that was before the dash cam era.... armsid
I agree with Vince alot of East Europeans drive their own cars on non English Licences non English no. plates and usually tax insurance mot as well Leaving the country for a number of days each year means not permanent residence and going by the costs of ins. tax mot etc it works out cheaper than here ps MOT CT in France is 20 euros for 2yrs mot here it would be £110.00 a big saving plus is the test in the EU countries all to the same standard as ours? France has differing laws to us kids aged 14 can ride twist and go mopeds (max 25 mph) no licence req. Won,t happen hear too much money to lose Edited December 26, 2023 by armsid

It makes stuff all difference anyway, not like EU nationals have to take another test if they do swap out their licence for a UK one. In fact they actually get punished by the insurance companies if they do follow the letter of the law because they find their premiums going up as they”haven’t had their licenses very long”. The thought of taking into account the amount of time that an EU licence was held was met with “computer says no” every time I tried. The insurance industry in this country really is the absolute pits.

Maybe choose one that doesn't need constant reformatting of the card?
