Hunter_zero
just wondering if anyone on here knows the amount of cooking oil i can use in my motor LEGALY per year?cheers rob It's based on mileage IIRC. A chap I know has been using a 50/50 mix of new veg oil & diesel which seems to be doing okay. A few years back (when that chap hit the headlines over his fuel making factory(nay shed)) I looked in to brewing my own fuel but found two major draw backs. First the cost of methanol and second the soap waste. The results I can up with is that it is easy to make but add the hassle factor of buying and storing methanol in bulk and paying a licenced waste carrier to take the soap and you might as well use normal diesel unless your on a quest to save the planet! Veg oil + diesel is another matter all together. I know you buy 5gal drums of veg oil for £2.99 then you have 5 gals of diesel, so your talking 10 gals for £25 or £2.50~ per gallon. Cranfield
cheapest ive seen veg oil,is 58 p per litre, and that was on offer.hardly seems worth the risk. If your vehicle is designed to run on vegetable oil, or a mix with diesel, there is no risk. I wish diesel was 58p a litre. I have a 3.0 turbo diesel Toyota Surf Shooting/Fishing wagon and have run that on a 50/50 mix of diesel/vegetable oil, with no problems in performance, smell, smoking etc. I believe most of the problems can come from using used oil, that may have contaminants in it. ROBLATCH
will a 50/50 mix be ok for a 96 disco? or would i be better off reducing the veg oil to something like 80/20 to start with ?

berettaman1
I must admit I have gone down that road ,I now and then buy 15 litres of corn oil from my local Super market, and !! its cholesterol free!!! I put it in the tank and fill up with regular diesel, I cant tell the differance but my mates sometimes ask-- is there a chippy round Here?? the only downside is that the price has shot up from 58p per litre to 78+! HHHhhm, this goverment likes to squeeze the ordinary members of our country untill we squeak!!.

tinbum71
If you're gonna use new oil, veg oil is best (rapeseed). It has lower coke and soap issues than corn or sunflower oil. If you "process" your oil, you can make up to 2500ltr a year before informing hmrc. Processing ,as far as I can tell from hmrc website, can be as little as adding a solvent to prevent fuel going waxy in the tank. I have been using up to 100% in the summer to 50% mix in winter for 3 tears now. Almost any diesel engine will run with this mix EXCEPT for common rail diesels. Apparently, these need modification to run. Always check for details on your engine on t'interweb!

Bigmike
bit about it.......HERE theres loads about it on the net Think very hard about using a mix in a modern/ common rail system. I know the pumps Ford use are very sensitive and expensive to repair. Also it will invalidate any warranty on any diesel vehicle. However it does work fine on the last generation of diesel engines. berettaman1
I run a 98 Rover 200 td, and have put 15 lts of corn oil in now and then, and topped up with diesel, I have not noticed any difference in performance /economy, except once when I was too skint to top up with the pump stuff and found my car ran even more smoothly than usual as if it was now a 6 cylinder instead of 4! just like it was a petrol engine that had the ignition retarded a bit.
